I like the prototype very much, and the rest of your gallery is very nice as well ^^

A friend once told me that Batman uses a cape because it helps camouflage him in darkness. The fact that it stretches and flows beyond his body helps create a size illusion and makes him a harder target to hit. It also adds to his intimidation factor by making him appear more than human to the untrained eye.
I like your version, but he looks sad...and kind of mutated.

Thanks. I purposely made him look sad, as I always found his story to be quite gloomy. Someone once told me that he'll never stop being Batman, thus he is doomed to loneliness... at least in the love department. A psychiatrist would have a field day with this guy.
I've also read that the Joker is suppose represent how Batman might have turned out... that they suffer from the same mental illness but choose to deal with it in different ways. No matter how you look at it, that's some depressing stuff right there.
As for the "mutated" appearance, I'm just gonna assume that you are referring to how I exaggerate certain parts of the anatomy when I draw, such as the shoulders, knees, and arms. Otherwise, I'm not quite sure what you mean.

Well, I just look at him and think he looks less like a man in a costume, and more like that's his body. I don't know why, really; maybe because it's more detailed than, say, the Batman Beyond design. Or maybe it's the spikes on his back.

Very nice! He looks like he could be an underwater batman, too. This inking is flawless, how long did it take you? I look forward to seeing the colored version!

It's actually not inked at all, just pencils. The original sketch took me a few hours, as I had trouble getting the feet right. It's hard to get a reference for this kind of pose, even in anatomy books, so I asked my wife to pose for me.
After I'm done with the sketch, I use a glass table and pretty much trace the original sketch (very lightly) while holding a flashlight underneath the table. Once I'm done tracing, I go over the lines again, making them darker, using my mouse pad to keep from smudging.
I don't have any smudge-free paper at the moment, just tons of sketch paper
