Description Several years ago, I learned about the whole trend among some parents of eating the mother's placenta after their baby is born. Apparently it's becoming quite popular with certain mothers. Not to mention several celebrities, such as the Kardashians, Hilary Duff, Mayim Bialik, Alicia Silverstone (who also admitted to feeding her infant son regurgitated food), Tia and Tamera Mowry, Katherine Heigl, and Chrissy Teigen, have eaten their placentas, which probably inspired lots of moms to do it. Some eat it raw, while others cook and eat it, and sometimes the father eats the placenta as well. As for me, when I heard about this trend, I thought it was disgusting. To be honest, I can't think of many things as disgusting to eat as a placenta. It's a fucking human organ with blood vessels!

But the worst thing about is is that many of these moms claim that eating the placenta has "health benefits", such as providing nutrients for the mother and the baby and combatting against postpartum depression. I did a little digging, and it turns out that there are no benefits whatsoever to eating the placenta. Many of the supposed "benefits" are caused by other things. Not only that, but placentophagy (that's the term for it) can potentially be dangerous. The human placenta contains mercury and lead, both of which are poisonous, as well as plenty of bacteria and viruses. If the mother eats her placenta, she can end up getting these germs or even pass them onto her baby (especially if she nurses the baby). It has been proven that group B streptococcus bacteria are in the placenta and can be passed onto the mom and the baby. Also, if the mother has any STDs, they will be present in the placenta, so it's probably not a good idea to be eating it.

This is why you should not eat your placenta. It's disgusting, unsanitary, and potentially dangerous. Just because celebrities are doing it doesn't mean you should be doing it too.
