Description
Recently, during a session in Congress, Mitch McConnell froze during his speech at a press conference, and Dianne Feinstein appeared to be confused as to what was going on in the session. Mitch McConnell is 81 and Dianne Feinstein is 90. This brought about discussion that the two of them might be too old for Congress. It doesn't help that our president is the oldest we've ever had in office and he seems to be running again in 2024, possibly against the equally geriatric Donald Trump (although the much younger Ron DeSantis could get the nominee instead since he's becoming quite popular among Republicans). This is nothing new - years ago, Strom Thurmond served in Congress until he died at the age of 100, when he was frail and unable to speak.Honestly, I think Congress needs to have a mandatory retirement age. Some people are just too old to hold a political office. I do get that people want experienced people to serve in Congress, but plenty of people in their forties and fifties are experienced with politics as well. When you're old, you increase the risk of dying in office. I honestly think that Congress should have 80 as the mandatory retirement age, at which age older Congresspersons should step down and let someone younger take their place.
