My god! When this said Arabian stud, I was expecting something a bit more proportional. This horse's head and neck . . . they seem too narrow to be healthy. Can he breathe properly? I guess as long as he was never much a saddle horse, he would manage alright . . .
Oh, I think I get the extremes. Is he one of those "exotic show" varieties of Arabian?
I'm sorry, I know most of you think this is beautiful, but I've seen Arabians with real breathing issues because of this look, and this horse looks like one of those poor Arabians: the ones bred to be living art, not usable, comfortable animals.

First of all, arabians are not like dogs.. they do not have breathing issues because of the way they are built... This is a typical arabian head and neck.. most would call it typey. Arabian blood is in all horses so if you dont like em' dont have em....

I've met horses with breathing problems before because of the shape of their heads. Most were Arabian, though the problem is no means confined to them. The ones I'm referring have limited wind; they have no problem breathing if not made to do strenuous activity. One, I know, even served as a kid's hack and dressage horse, and they only found out about his obstructed breathing when the kid finally decided to try 3-day eventing.
This typey is also only a typey in some countries. The U.S. is the first to come to mind. In other countries, including countries of the Arabian's origin, it may be considered too refined.
For the record, I like Arabians. I don't know a horse breed I don't like. Please don't ever get the impression that I dislike a horse breed. (The moment I come accross such an undesirable breed, I'll let you know.) Pointing out an issue with some breeding practices in a breed doesn't mean you don't like the breed. If anything, correcting wrong breeding practices works to save a breed. You point them out to protect a breed you like to keep it healthy.
And there are plenty of Arabians who are "less refined" and look more substantial. Besides, this Arabian does not strike me as typical; I've met a number of U.S. Arabians (some with breathing issues, most without, nearly all very intelligent), and few I knew matched this horse. This guy looks like a blue-ribbon halter shower, not a typical run-of-the-mill American Arabian.
This extremely refined look occurs naturally in perfectly healthy, great wind-carrying Arabians, but it is not the most common look among them. If you look at asil Arabian (original Arabian) heads, they vary from dished to straight, and the most common face is a dish that is less extreme than what is often desired in the U.S. When Arabians are bred only for refined looks and not for performance, the results are not always desirable. That being said, the comments here have assured me that this isn't the case with this Arabian, thankfully. With good wind and this look, he was probably bred to look this way from horses who actually had good wind copacity and correct skull anatomy.

Trust me, This is natural and he was a perfectly healthy individual at the time of this photo. He was purebred from old arabian stock.

wow - there's been a LOT of breeding preferences put into effect since then. You rarely see them with the windpipe area that extended anymore; the mitbah, it's called...though supposedly it is longer in the best of the breeds to allow for greater bridle flexibility and easier breathing. I haven't seen them quite like that though. Very cool!

yeah it's very rare to see ones that awesome nowadays. we still breed for that, i actually show a mare that's fairly closely related to this particular stud. i miss how stallions used to look back then, they actually LOOKED like studs, not mares with nuts our ranch still does the old Crabbet breeding, so lots of our horses still look like this guy

Coolio! I'm all for free stuff XD
Do you ride Western or English? I fear the English saddle!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
vengeofthestars In reply to DaChief07 [2009-06-11 02:24:54 +0000 UTC]
i ride both but my preference no, passion! is English. I learned on western but even before i started riding i read everything i could on english equitation so as i learned i applied the knowledge to my western riding until i bought my dressage saddle/english bridle.
you should give an english saddle a try sometime itd be good experience and english style riding really strengthens your legs and improves balance. just like bareback riding would.
i only ride western when i dont take my saddle to my trainers or when im barrel racing with her. Actually we are going team panning mthis weekend i think so thatll be fun! ive never done it before so im excited to try something new on horseback.
i am assuming you ride? do you do any sports or shows?

Unfortunately, I don't ride. I wish, but no dice. ....and the only show I've ever participated in was in, I think, 8th grade when I went on a week-long horse camp trip and we all got to show off what we learned at the end of the week ^^ I had a white hosre named Marshall, and he would not jump those bars for anything
We did a little barrel-racing, but mostly the camp was for trail rides out in thewilds by the lake.

ah i did the same thing first time i ever rode was in a summer camp in 7th grade and we had our little show at the end and everyone got different awards. i have a natural talent for riding aparently, all the counslers kept asking ''are you sure youve never ridden before?' im like o.O yes.
i got the pro-in-one-week award a little peice of construction paper with those words cut into it. it was cute and it gave me the confidence to go out and learn to ride. (i hope i dont sound like im bragging, thats not what im trying to do at all
)
Trail rides are fun, i havent gone on one since that camp.
Well i certainly hope you get a chance to ride again are there any barns near you? lessons are expensive but if you really wanted to you cuold get a job and pay them yourself, thats what im doing with my horse.

We did have a boarding pasture just down the road until they developed it a couple years ago. You know they filled it in with those houses that are too expensive tobuy, so they end up renting them out to low-lifes and destructive people. oh well
I miss visiting those horses. There was one huge horse called Mickey who was brown with a black mane and tail and white on his legs up to his belly and his entire face was white, too ^^ There was also a pony that looked like his twin XD
