Description
A civilian fleet disembarks from the superdreadnought Av-Telvanis Rek. The dreadnought shall soon depart to continue its 10 cycle long FTL transport mission, as it travels throughout the trans-galactic empire of Man.--
Hey, you guys tired of spam from me yet? Well, this one is a brand new image, just crafted from raw pixels today. I have a seriously large pile of art that I'd love to share with you all. The deluge of sketches will stop...for now, though. I don't want to scare too many of you all off.

So Av-Telvanis Rek has a standard 10-cycle 'route' it takes, and civilian ships can catch a ride from one point to the other? Kinda like a ferry and cars then I love how even your sketches have such life and detail and structure to them

Volatile stuff, raw pixels.Β You do pretty good work with them.
(Friendly reminder that stuff from you is always interesting even if I don't have the brainpower to comment everything )

Raw pixels are the best material to work with, but they do cause intense delirium. Sort of gotta balance the good with the bad, really.

The atmosphere and designs in this one totally sucked me in at first glance.Β This looks fantastic so far!

Very cool! I love seeing midsize ships next to big ships.... next to gigantic ships!

It's like a nesting doll. The largest ships are there to be dwarfed by even larger vessels, because really...in space there is no limit to the size you can make things. The orbital facilities are impressive sights to behold..I'm eventually going to get around to drawing them.

Mmmm.... deluge! Hit me with all them, tasty, fresh pixels! I love the idea of 'carriers', especially in FTL space settings. If FTL were cheap and easy, if any little shuttle could mount an FTL drive, then where're all the aliens at? But if you say FTL is hard, even for advanced races, and only big, powerful ships can mount them (or they are arrayed in 'static' rings or jump-points)... then you have a plausible reason why we don't see them whizzing overhead all the time. Also, for game settings, it's a great way to constrain the player(s) early on, and access to their first jump-capable ship later on is a big deal.
I love how your ships show a great degree of differences, as if they were manufactured by disparate organizations with different design philosophies across time and space. When all ships looks 'sameish' it makes me think the race building them has no creativity... no soul.

A couple things are the focus of this piece. The 3 eras of tech, in hull and propulsion systems, are all represented. The smooth hulled luxury liner drifting in from the top left, has Biotek hull composites, and Syden-KΓΌsche non-Newtonian drives. This is decades, or potentially even centuries more advanced over the industrial hauler, the ship most in focus in the center of the image.
The S-K drive equipped luxury liner is a toy compared to the Field Skimmer classed science vessel, floating in the mid distance. That being the ship with the circular hull section, and no discernible drive emission whatsoever. I drew one of those classes of vessels previously.
Field Skimmers are designed to be 'native inhabitants' of non-Newtonian realities. As such, they can operate entirely within the Mirror and other such strange dimensions.
---
FTL is limited to the massive super-dreadnought for many reasons, most of which you mentioned yourself. Another key aspect though, is how effective it is at controlling your society, if you (as the controlling government body) can limit or direct all travel.
The Runner class vessel is a corporation owned and operated FTL transport, but operates entirely within the oversight of PsiComp.
The same is true of the Gul Transit system, the first image ship I linked in the deviation description.
Chronologically, this image takes place during the early to mid-part of the Last Golden Age. Mankind has effectively crushed any and all alien space-faring races, of which there were only a few that achieved any form of faster than light travel. There really was no challenge to the rise of humanity, but what else can you expect, when humans are cheating at the very laws of spacetime, and using hyper-intelligent Metatek machine gods to accomplish their goals.

Ah, the socio-political reasons for massive FTL installations quite escaped me, I must admit. I don't think like a totalitarian despot often enough... perhaps I should remedy that? Lovely images, thanks for the detailed explanations!

The Orwellian school of dystopian thought is a style of writing that isn't really visited enough these days. Mostly encountered only in books now, certainly not in any 'scifi' blockbuster movies. Too many people are obsessed with Transformers and Star Wars/Star Trek reboots.

I always liked Orwellian dystopian fiction. 1984 was much better when I read it at thirty five than it was when I read it at seventeen. Brave New World and Animal Farm were similarly improved by my own maturation. Fahrenheit 451 is still a crazy mind-screw of a book, no matter when I read it
I liked ST and SW as 'turn off your brain and watch the pretty lights' movies, but neither of them had any impact on my thought processes... and TF is just drivel.

gahah, and a wild donaldbrent comment appears! Quick!
Going to have to respond to this one in full, soon. You caught me as I was right in the middle of my food/etc part of the day. But I got quite a few things to say in response, for sure.

I do so love your full responses, and even quick notes during lunch are much appreciated! Thanks!

I don't want to lose any more watchers than I already do by posting character/smut images. :I
Image spam annoys some people, almost as much as posting stuff they don't want to see. What can I say, internet is full of silly people.
I've got the majority of my decent images im my backlog posted. There are a few industrial sketches that are just too sketchy to post in my main gallery, and quite a lot of porn. I'll hold back on the sketches, for now, but rest assured I'm not going to be slowing down on art production any time soon.
