Nice! Really good use of basic shapes to create something new and fun, I love the ring and wedge design, and I can't wait to see how you give it a sense of scale (lots of tiny lights, I bet)!

Better than all those showy and crude destroyers, for sure. :u

What are you using it for, comic, concept art for a movie?

Thanks! I made a specific effort to arrange the angles and surfaces so that they transition into each other. Still I have to keep it from just looking too blocky, but I think it's on track so far.

Nice, sleek design. I'am wondering: Has it some kind of warp drive? Is the ring structure part of the warp drive? If not, what is it for?

Hyperphase In reply to Sebbaa [2017-08-02 16:31:36 +0000 UTC]

The ring is the habitation/docking sector, Β essentially. It's one of the more heavily armored parts of the ship (keeping in mind that this thing has an average three meters of armor across the hull). As for movement- i modify things. Warp drives are the norm, but no ring requirements. Just lots of power. The ship itself, can accelerate at approximately 450G's (and not crush everyone inside thanks to inertia compensators in the habitation section).Β

Daemoria In reply to Sebbaa [2017-08-02 15:08:26 +0000 UTC]

The ring, in my mind is the habitation sector. The actual internal detailing is still up to debate. The ship itself is a bit bigger than Manhattan Island, so the internal surface of the habitation sector is going to have a lot of 'city' lights, to help sell the scale. The actual propulsion system involves molesting a captive miniature star. You'd have to ask Hyperphase for specifics on the movement system, this ship is from his own IP.

How does gravity work in the Hab ring? Clearly it doesn't spin independently of the rest of the ship, but it looks like in an emergency spinning the ship could be used as a backup, provided the hab ring's artificial gravity field was curved so that down is always facing away from the center of the ship.

Daemoria In reply to alexthegreater [2017-08-03 09:18:47 +0000 UTC]

I imagine in a pinch, the entire ship could rotate around the center axis point. The tech is what I call soft-scifi, more emphasis on Rule of Cool... so some concessions are made to that.

I like it.

Hyperphase In reply to alexthegreater [2017-08-03 02:38:57 +0000 UTC]

The artificial gravity is indeed curved around the hab ring. Spinning can be (and sometimes is used to save power) as an source of gravity.Β

I like it when soft sci-fi tech is combined with hard sci-fi rules like that. It's really boring when spaceships end up being laid out like boats just because artificial gravity allows it. What if that wasn't the most efficient way to arrange the grav plates? What happens if they fail? A curved gravity field seems like it might be more efficient and safer, and more importantly allows for more visually interesting designs.

You just did. You can ask another one tho...

LudedWolf In reply to Daemoria [2017-08-02 14:34:57 +0000 UTC]

That is true Anyway I'm planning on writing a Space Opera series. Similar to Outlaw Star(youtu.be/8SPBJRzW2HM )and a little bit of The Andromeda(youtu.be/sbhxKrBe0AA ). The thing is I just realized I don't know spaceships! What i mean by that types of Spaceships. For example I know what the difference between a Battleship and a Cruiser is. But what's the difference between a frigate and a Corvette? How many ships are in a flotilla. How many guns would a Destroyer have? What the difference between a Grand Admiral any vice admiral? I just want to know where I can find informations on these if you know what I'm saying.

Oh, you have a lot of interesting research into military ships ahead of you. This might be a good starting pointΒ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

LudedWolf In reply to Sebbaa [2017-08-02 15:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you So much! I took a look at it kinda complicated. But I think it will help me. I just don't know how much of it can apply to starships. Also one more question for you. What is a class when it comes to ships? I keep seeing this come up not only in Sci-fi,but real life navel ships to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoria In reply to LudedWolf [2017-08-02 15:17:28 +0000 UTC]

You're going to have to do a lot of research, my friend. You have a long road ahead of you, and I suggest you spend some serious time in primary resources. Encyclopedias, reports, and lots and lots of non-fiction accounts of warfare.

'Class' is short for 'classification', also known as designation, or role. Quite simply, what is the purpose of the vessel.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

LudedWolf In reply to Daemoria [2017-08-02 15:25:47 +0000 UTC]

For example what is a Provident class? That a ship that I seen in Star Wars the clone war. It act no different then any other separatist ship. Pretty much do the same thing actually. By the way the Republic talks about these ships make it seem like a special or is important. You know what I mean?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoria In reply to LudedWolf [2017-08-02 15:34:09 +0000 UTC]

That's the whole aspect of writing, and establishing a cohesive setting. It's only as 'special' as the script needs to be. Your 'McGuffin' class ship is important because it does 'x' and 'y' better than the older 'MarrySue' class vessel. And because you say so.

I'm not going to tell you how to write a story, that's ultimately up to you. Generally speaking though, you want to come up with characters and entities to populate the worlds you weave. It's going to take effort, yes, but nothing is free.

Damn I was afraid of that, but I knew from the start it wouldn't be easy.

As for Classification. That the thing I suspect that, but at the same time. The Space Operas, and Sci-fi military shows and Books. Kinda complicate things. For example I knew an escort ship. Is design to protect other ships or fleets. When it comes to sci-fi it makes it sound like it's just the name.

I'd have to figure a way to get it recorded that didn't fill my hard-drives. Some projects are more suited for time lapse, than others. Quicker designs where I know exactly what I'm doing going in might be better, because there won't be huge stretches of me noodling over something, and deleting it over and over. :v
