Description
Previously , The Red Horizon, and elements of the Laughing Swarm fleet assemble inside the transdimensional space known as the Mirror. Some new information has been brought to light.----------------------------------------------------------------------
Protected from madness of the Mirror, deep inside the superstructure of the Red Horizon, a meeting between lords was about to start. A thick atmosphere of tension and eagerness filled the small room. Rumors had already been spreading throughout the scattered few ships that comprised the fleet. The lords present, commanders of the sub-capital classed vessels docked inside the Red Horizon, knew something of great importance would be revealed at this meeting.
The exact details, were as of yet, unknown.
A warning chirp issued from the air, and as the door hissed open, Red Horizon spoke.
[]!Atense !High Lord on deck[]
The scattered group of the Laughing Swarm crew shifted to attention, and conversation was cut short. High Lord Th-zho entered the chamber, acknowledging the assembled lords and crew with a curt nod.
Moving to the center of the chamber, Th-zho gestured, bringing the central pedestal to life. Green light spilled upwards, and sigils crystalized in the middle of the air as the pedestal completed its boot-up procedure.
"Uhm."
Th-zho grimaced at the interruption. Looking around the chamber, appearing to just notice the other figures present for the first time, and cleared her throat. The assembled lords and crew shifted uneasily, aware of how dangerous the situation had just become.
:.My ...apologȉe͒̎ͨs .I forget our guests have not our capability of understanding .For their benefit, we shall continue as s̽̾ͬ͑u̾̽̑ͦͭch:
The tension drained out of the air, as the crew relaxed once more. A hidden chemical exchange, diffused the situation entirely.
Th-zho chuckled. The nervous guests glanced back at the crew that towered above them, feebly laughing along with her.
:.As I w̆̋a͗s saying, werren currently undergoing final preparations for our current oper̬̣̯͎̻̟̄̒ͬ̈́ͅa̪t͔͑ͭion:
She gestured at the air in front of her, causing an holographic representation of trajectories to swim through the room.
:.The ability to transition the Red Horizon to slow space will restored within the curr̳̬̗͑e͇͚̭nt Set:
The Silka corvette commanders shifted, and glanced eagerly at each other. This was great news, indeed. No longer would the corvettes need to operate in isolation, away from the battlecarrier.
:.Fur̿t͒̋her more, thanks to information gained from our fleet elements, werren now in a better position than ever bě̐̈̿fore: Th-zho glanced at Lord Indall, on her right. :.We know now that our current reference univers̠͉̹e̦̼͙̬͈ is linked to component galaxy 1, otherwise known as the Milky Way:
:.Yes, this me͐̈ā̄́͒̋ns one, or many things .It is our past .We have a chance to recover our breath, and make preparations and to learn as much as we can .There is much we can learn from the factions in this divergent reality:
:To that end, I have accepted the requests of one such
: ?You repͣͯͫ͆r̀esent... Kasparov ?Yes:
"Y-yes? I mean... yes! I do!"

Nothing can get done without some sort of sexiness breaking out. A future I can believe. I mean at some point it's hard to distinguish between countless cultures and the countless breakthroughs and changes for easier access to those advancements once culture has accepted them and grown with them. The ideology of what becomes second nature countless times over and eventually what is a remnant to our genepool is now excitedly hurried along to an expanse of two different heritages to prove that basic understanding can be changed and possesses the ability to change. Thus, sexiness breaks out at every scene and is acceptable and encouraged by me to you. Really wish this stuff was around when I was younger <. < Would've come in handy.

Technology of today, what does it look like to people from ...the 1970s? Strange small plastic cards... those are telephones? Computers? You're lying, surely. And that's only a few decades back. Go back further, to the 40s, and people might run in fear from the things you hold in your pocket.
The difficult part of setting a technological basis 7000 years or so in the future is to keep some aspects relatable to our current frame of reference. Everything else is possible though. Hell, the concept of a society that has infinite resources is something almost approaching fantasy, given our own actual bleak situation in the real world. People are killing themselves over shiny rocks and clean drinkable water... what a strange concept to a human society that has access to millions of galaxies, and trillions of worlds.

Yup-yup. It's an odd thing - on the one hand, someone in 1900 could have taken the idea that people will have wireless radio, that the emerging factory system will mass produce it until everyone can have one, of course it will be small and portable, to maximize its usefulness, and extrapolated some useful applications of that. The tech was already in existence, we just refined it a little, in the grand scheme of things... and yet, it's a series of mental steps no one was capable of.

This is an interesting, but VERY well done piece - like the diversity of the crew (as in characters!! Hey PC F/Wits, that's what Diversity IS ABOUT: CHARACTER!!).
So, is this a planned strike against Psi-Corp?
Or someone else?

There is no such faction as 'Psi-Corp'. The institution that created the fleets is referred to as the PsiComp.
This meeting though takes place in a universe that is luckily separate from my own Bright Future setting, and is in something called the Nebulosa Ots, part of the long running Aiers setting. This is something that was created by Shabazik , as sort of a really cool community.
The factions currently being faced are owned by Shabazik, owner of the Kasparov CIA and the whole Nebulosa Ots setting, and the various elements of Khal941's retrograde factions (Nato, Soviets, PLA, etc). Shabazik tasked the Laughing Swarm to track down some elements of the Nato faction, after they caused a bit of a problem on one of Kasparov's planets.

Apologies - dunno where I got that from.
Love to see some battle with the Swarm against those darn antagonists!!
I have seen it, but won't join; ain't got anything to offer, and I don't want to ruin their cred!
So the lass in the robe - a ship representative, or a blatant exhibitionist?
Good job as always

Fights between Exna fleet vessels, and current generation PsiComp vessels go poorly for the older vessels. There is a tech gap of a few centuries, or more.
Cylstian is just that way. She's actually something like a Air Traffic controller, in charge of the various sub-super capital vessels docked to the Red Horizon. Her previous job was a Navigator, but she got re-assigned to Hive Warden at some point in recent history.

Thanks! I honestly think it's one of the few elements of science fiction that hasn't really been overdone to the point of tedium, at least as far as I know. There really isn't that many films and games made about it, that I can recall. Also it provides a nice contrast to the elements of cosmic dread and eldritch abominations that I want to sneak in.

Indeed. A few tabletop roleplaying games are exploring transhumanism, but comic books and movies and video games haven't caught up yet...to eventually ruin it Also about your cosmic dread comment; have you heard of Eclipse Phase tabletop RPG?

Daemoria In reply to mikvance [2016-10-09 12:24:53 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I'm sure it'll happen in time. Maybe it might slip by everyone's notice though. Transhumanism has been around for a long time, and aside from a few movies and books, people seem content with ignoring it for now.
It's just too 'weird' for most people to accept. Market research shows you need to connect with your audience to sell books/movies/games/toys/dildos. /sarcasm
Obviously, that's not my goal here. If I can grab a few interested souls out of the Æther, all the better. I don't really plan on adjusting the Bright Future setting to fit some arbitrary targeted market in order to sell more books/movies/games/toys/dildos.
---
Nah, don't really know much of that particular TTRPG. I've not really paid much attention to that entertainment area recently. Most of my knowledge is of oldschool Battletech era, at most.
I visited the Eclipse Phase blog once or twice, because of other recommendations and being interested in the art. Sadly, it's nothing but walls of text, and therefore not that interesting to me. Some day, there will be a method for displaying massive amounts of text on screens without killing my eyes, but it's not this day.
Some art from the books would go a long way to keeping my interest in those articles.

I don't plan on letting the flames gutter out any time soon. I've learned my lesson from before, the best way to prevent artistic burn out is to have a wide range of subjects that you can focus on.
In fact, I plan on working on a bit of the more terrifying aspects of my settings. (And maybe get back into 3d modeling and texturing.) It is the season to be spooky, after all.

This is really beautiful.
One thing I like about your Bright Future is that none of the mystery is or seems to be merely arbitrary; every enigmatic detail is there for a reason you obviously know but we don't. But there is a Plan, and the reader/viewer is allowed the pleasure of making their own guesses, rather than being slammed with tedious Expository Lumps ("And here we have the municipal balloon works..." as some unreadable 19th century novel about the future might have it,)
And of course, raw terror is never far from even the most elegant or even playful of your situations; we are not told exactly why it's so dangerous to interrupt Th-zho with vulgar speech at a shipboard conference but there is no doubt that the danger is real, and hideously close.
We are in the presence of our far distant descendants, either more or less than human, or both, who turn to look upon us and our speculations and fears with "a gaze as blank and pitiless as the Sun.*"
*"a gaze as blank and pitiless as the Sun" taken from a description of a photograph of Kurt Gödel, something of an enigma himself, who seems to have been granted one or two insights into the nature of the Mirror, near the end of his life. Seemingly with predictable results. But where is he now, really? www.logic.univie.ac.at/images/…

Don't mind DonaldBrent - he's still feeling a bit misplaced, since his avatar/character has a small role in one of stories, and, according to the man's own contribution to the setting, his character was swept off an American Liberikan trade vessel, and he ended up on the shores of North-West Latvia Latonija, Ambercoast Democratic Republic Union.

"Swept off Liberika trade vessel"???
Not hardly... I spent years trapped in a cramped, leaking metal box with nothing to eat except tiny crabs and nothing to drink but tainted seawater! YEARS OF PAIN AND SUFFERING!!!
If you say it so bluntly, you'll make me sound like a psycho tramp who got tired of working on a cargo ship, hid in a container which got swept off in a storm, and then proceeded to panic and drank bad water which made him hallucinate for like, three whole days until the container washed up on shore, at which point he glimpsed Victoria Zoe frolicking on the beach and developed a crazy obsession with her ... and that's a terrible story!

Yes, the viewpoint perspective is actually deliberately set just higher than the level of the table. One of the next images I have planned for this set will show off the former Kasparov representitive, but she's going to be significantly shorter than even the shortest member of the Laughing Swarm.

Lord Indall is the commander of one of the Silka corvettes you can see there. Sadly, most of the actual exchanges were just sketches that we swapped between ourselves, and never submitted to the deviantart galleries.
Indall shall be showing up in the future, though. I might even publish some hints at her relationships with her biotek lover/pet/fashion choices. ...if the prudes who visit dA will let me, that is. I already got suspended once for listing Axbet's age, so no promises there.
