I think, in general, the expression is fine when I take into account the method of stylizing the whole picture. But if you wanted to adjust it more realistically, it should look slightly different. At the same time, it would probably not be possible to see his nostrils from this angle. Also, he would probably have much more wrinkles in his expression, for example around the mouth. But overall, I think it's very good.

Hmm... I was referencing a photo I took of myself in the mirror for his face, and I could see nostrils in the photo, but it's possible the angle for his face comes across differently. There weren't too many wrinkles in the photo, but I also didn't want to overdo it and have too many minor details (plus, I can't open my mouth that wide, so there's also that. :P).
I think I'll take a closer look at the reference photo, since I think there might be a few things I could emphasize more. (I mainly just wanted to make sure he didn't look like some mutated monster or something, since that can happen when I try semi-realistic stuff)

I understand, but we see him from the top, and when a person opens his mouth like this, his nostrils should rise / the skin stretches to stretch and the nostrils should not be seen. And about wrinkles, I thought that wrinkles could enhance the expression even more and that the open-stitch on the face must surely appear, but it all depends on the way of stylization. 
In any case, he looks good and I wish good luck in the next painting.
