Description
I leaned back in my chair, sighing in resignation as I regarded the plethora of papers in front of me. “Nera, why are you trying so hard to get me to join a club? If I had wanted to join one, I would’ve done so the first day, don’t you think?”Nera, the class president of Jindai High School’s Junior class, growled in frustration, slamming her hand down on the desk inches from my face. “It’s absolutely unacceptable that you spend your days after class just lounging around in your house! You have to get out and experience life now, while you’re still young!” I looked her over seriously as I leaned back in my chair.
'How to say this.' I paused in my reverie to look her over, chewing on my lip as I did so. The girl, Nera, had her short brown hair in a bob hair style, and a face that many would consider attractive. The school uniform, a black vest over a red top and a checkered skirt for the girls mimicked her currently stiff posture.
“Pardon me for saying so Nera, but you really have no say in the matter. I’m not going to join any clubs. I have more important things to do, and there is nothing you can do or say that'll change my mind," I commented rationally. "Unlike you, I actually have to work to pay for my schooling." I looked up at the clock, sincerely wishing for the bell to ring sooner. 'No such luck, it's still another half hour before school is dismissed.'
"You're only seventeen! You shouldn't have to pay for your schooling! What kind of parents wouldn't pay for your classes!" Nera shouted at me, her face starting to go bright red.
I felt a sharp pain in my chest, looking away silently as all conversation in the classroom instantly hushed. I could quite plainly hear Nera stumble awkwardly over several words. "That's none of your business." I stuffed the papers slowly into my pack before I stood up. "I'll consider it, but don't hold your breath." I glanced up at the clock as I advanced on the door, hesitating.
Almost on cue, I heard the PA system beep, and counselor Roy Estrada's voice droned in a dull monotone. {"Trace Legacy, please report to the principal's office. I repeat, Trace Legacy, please report to the principal's office. Thank you."}
I didn't even glance back at Nera, although I could definitely feel the hostility coming from her. 'Oops, I forgot. She really hates to be ignored...'
"Don't think this is over yet, Trace!" Nera seethed. I stumbled a little as she forced her way past me, presumably heading to the student council room.
Slowly, the drama apparently over, I heard the other students conversations start back up hesitantly. I shrugged, closing the door gently as I proceeded down the hallway, the only sound the screech of my sneakers on the linoleum floor. Of course, at the time, I think that, had I decided to glance behind me, I would've noticed a small dark shadow proceeding down the hall behind me, silent as death.
