Awesome. Looks like Tetsujin with a crescent moon on his head.

I would say GR2 is the Giant Robo equivalent to Black Ox more than anything.

You're probably right.
BTW, I don't know if you remember. But in the past I joked about the intro song from the 80s Tetsujin. And I had this idea of "Tetsuo... Tetsuo... Tetsuo Shima GO!" Because I often associated Taiyo no Shisha with Akira.

You wouldn't be wrong since Tetsuo is a Tetsujin reference

I bet so. And what's even more interesting is that in the original manga and anime, Dr. Shikishima, Shotaro's mentor, has a son named Tetsuo. Who oddly was not in the 80s series, and was replaced with Makiko. In fact, there's a lot of references from Tetsujin in Akira. Down to them both having a protagonist named Shotaro Kaneda.

Akira was intended to be a retelling of Tetsujin

That's awesome! Though, I guess one could see Akira as like an alternate universe. Like an alternate retelling of Tetsujin.
Tetsuo-O! Tetsuo-O! Tetsuo Shima GO!

Funnily enough the person who designed him (Satoru Ozawa) took inspiration from Tetsujin for GR2 since he was working as an illustrator and designer on Giant Robo with Tetsujin creator Mitsuteru Yokoyama.

Satoru Ozawa still draws the GR robots on his Twitter since he stated those are some of his favorite designs he ever made
