Description
☆ KING DEDEDE (デデデ大王) is certainly my #1 most beloved character ever-- always has been, always will be. I believe my sculpture here represents the emperor penguin in his truest and most perfect design, mainly focusing on that of Kirby Super Star, but also adding modern elements of Brawl and the Advance/DS games. I think what I like best about Dedede's design, though, is his primary color scheme of red, yellow, and blue- the building blocks of all other colors. I also enjoy his fashion sense (especially the recent kimono undershirt -not pictured- and his traditional haramaki waist-band) in addition to the oversized robe he always wears and the puff-ball hat/ crown-combo with stylish egg-shape on the forehead.☆☆ As often as I've drawn Dedede, I know it is true when HAL says "there is a delicate balance to his face and mouth that can be quite the challenge for designers"; in fact, that is one of the reasons I love, not only D3, but also the Kirby series as a whole, in that it actually relates to the depth of how one plays such games. Think about it: Kirby games are well known for being quite simple, and as some may say, very easy- to both beat AND pick-up-and-play. That is the same case with Dedede, as well as the rest of the denizens of Dream Land- the majority are very simple to learn to draw (even the anime got it right, with the end-theme, Kihon Wa Maru) HOWEVER-- that is not to say either playing or drawing related subjects is easy to master! For example, it is the intricacies within King Dedede's simple design (such as head-to-body ratio, flow-to-his-robe's-trim, face-structure-as-mentioned, and especially, as with many other Kirby characters: bad-lengthy-noodle-arms!) all which make mastering the art style a secret challenge, much like collecting all the special items in the games, or knowing when to use the right ability at the right time.
☆☆☆ So yeah, King Dedede totally pwns. He has all the basic abilities Kirby has (sans Copy Abilities), in addition to his strength to crush lesser beings by his mighty jumps, as well as to lift that massive mallet, which coincidentally grants him all the moves Hammer Ability enables. Dedede's also the most developed Kirby character, personality-wise, in my opinion, aided by the fact that he's appeared in every game but KatAM. In the beginning, the King started off as a thief and a glutton (though he still has these traits), ruling over the populace by depriving them of necessities. After being bested by Kirby, Dedede trained hard to achieve the same strength as the pink pudge displayed, yet was again trumped by a powered-up Kirby when trying to protect the kingdom (albeit, by stealing again). Then, in Super Star +Ultra, Dedede continued to challenge and compete with Kirby, striving to be better than him in fighting and eating, but both times being dethroned and shown the error of his ways. Even after all his Revenge planning, it just goes to show, jealousy and force can not darken a heart as pure as Kirby's. Then, he was possessed a couple of times, and was actually grateful to Kirby for aiding him and his kingdom. This is when Dedede truly has a change of heart, and (begrudgingly) helps him out in times of need. Afterwords, having LEARNED his lessons, both Dedede and Kirby generally are on good terms (and an awesome playable character in Return to Dream Land!), except when the former is falsely accused by the latter of misdeeds, or when Kirby indignantly intrudes on the King's private property (Get of'fa my lawn, ya darn kids!). Personally, I believe my attitude and style also reflect Dedede's progression/philosophy, and I guess that's another reason I'm so drawn to his character. Here's hoping he continues to play a fun, helpful role in future games, as well as further embraces his Japanese-ness, as seen in Ninja Dojo and Samurai Kirby-- Whaha~!

Always and forever the great king of dreamland. You're definitely right about the delicate balance with the characters. Dedede's probably the hardest when it comes to getting his head and body proportions exactly right, as well as making him look stout enough. Although Bonkers is a pretty close second with that. Wonder if it's a hammer thing?

Domo arigato, Master Minon, for stoping by my humble sculpture to leave such thoughtful a comment. You may look forward to an as-of-yet-not-seen Bonkers figure, fully painted, coming up at a later date. I think you will find I've also done his form great justice!

Nice! I like your bit about Dedede, too. Very thoughtful.
Is, uh... "HE" going to be next? I mean, he's the only other main main main Kirby character left.

Thanks! I'm glad people are reading my words-- that's just another reason to view my newly uploaded sculptures HERE, instead of on "that" fansite, where I hastily skipped the speeches. "He" will of course be next, but don't spoil the surprise~

Great work as always.
I'm just getting into clay and sculpting work, man it is so tough!
Have you made a tutorial on how you do your work yet?

Thankyou! I applaud you on getting into clay- work hard, and I look forward to seeing some of it. You know, that is an outstanding idea- to make a tutorial on my process! I have not yet, but I really love the idea, and am honored people would be interested in seeing how its all done. If I ever get around to making more Kirby sculptures after this set's run its course (which I will- there are still so many new characters I want to make), I'll definitely remember to tutorial-ize the first chance I get.
