Cool piece. You seem to have put a lot of work into getting the hero suits right and the "bitching" complaints are, of course, spot-on. Sure, they're trivial all things considering, but I still get some amusement to think that it bothers some people.
The movie was certainly different than what people expected but, really, the games of the time had little story and no characterization for any of the characters (which is why the writers didn't even realize Toadstool and Daisy were different characters). While the setting was well-established (an Alice in Wonderland-like fantasy world) it would have been near impossible to keep even that element straight when trying to develop a story and characters. They found a pretty good balance between the three and, in my opinion, came up with a really cool concept. They got a lot of things wrong, but they also got the important things right.

I read John Leguizamo's autobiography recently (EXCELLENT book, very entertaining, I highly reccommend it) and he was discussing this movie and how it was -hell- creating it. How the producers were a husband and wife who argued constantly over every little thing, and how they had the best parties. Other little tidbits as well, like apparently Bob Hoskins smashed his hand accidentally while filming one of the car scenes and if you look at the last scene where they battle the Koopa-goo (LOL) his one hand is very stiff... it's because they painted his cast.
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures still, I personally liked it because it took the idea/elements from the game and creatively adapted it. I don't know where they got some of their ideas- like going through a frozen pipe on a mattress.
There is one thing that I will stand by, though...

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the movie, too.
Hell, I still think about Mario Adventures on the big screen, and how there should be more of them.
With all of Mario's popularity nowadays, you'd think there'd be another one, yeah?

True that! The remade the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, after all... I don't know how a Mario CG movie would go over or not... I guess it would depend on the plot.

I think a Mario movie in ANY animation format would go over better than another live action one.
Also, the characters would be able to have the same voices as they do in the game.

Ugh, the one mario "product" many hate, I don't realy hate it, I mean the idea was nice but they couldn't of just had some one that even worked at nintendo power there to help straighten out what was right and wrong?

Funny enough, they had focus groups composed of kids to tell them what to do. Kids told them they thought Mario was "grouchy" of all things, so I don't think they had a lot to go on regardless.

however a lot of people misinterpreted that movie as a crappily done adaption of a good video game into cinema form. Most think that it had nothing to do with the game at all. Granted, those costumes were kind of ridiculous, but they were supposed to be reminiscent of the way the costumes looked in the classic video game. And the plot, was surprising well adapted to the game(if anyone ever bothered to read the story in the instruction manual). The real reason that it wasn't all trippy and pretty like the video game world was because the producers didn't want it to turn out looking like a crappy ass sci-fi original film(no offense if you liked any of 'em) And if you just take the time to watch as a movie(not a Mario movie, just a movie) You may find it to be entertaining, quite a good movie indeed.

Really good defense of the movie. I appreciate hearing someone take the time despite its reputation. It really was a great effort with a lot more going for it than people realize (or choose not to admit).

Mmmmyes, of course. I didn't like any of the parts I managed to see while channel-surfing, except the Bob-omb.
That and this picture are the only things I really liked about that movie.

the bob-ombs were really the only thing adapted without a single detail being changed about them. They were the exact same as they were in the games. Little exploding wind up toys.
and yoshi was only there to help support the whole dinosaur schtick they had going.

Yeah, luigi is one of my favorite nintendo characters. I was pretty disapointed when I found that he had no mustache, and what was with the plot? I was very confused throughout the entire movie. It was not a very good mario movie. Somebody needs to remake it.
