STORY TIME

As Dante neared the northern tree line he could see Irina the Appaloosa, Mateo the bay Criollo, and the Lipizzaner twins, Mariana and Luciana. The only way you could tell the twins apart was from their eyes: Mariana had purple eyes and Luciana had green eyes. Mariana and Irina seemed to be in a heated argument.

  "Why do you always have to play the lead mare," Irina whined. "Can't I for once play the lead mare."

  "No, because none of us could play the baby because the rest of us don't have spots like you," Mariana argued.

  "But we're playing make-believe. Couldn't one of you pretend to have spots?"

"NO!" they all cried in unison.

Dante saw his chance to join in their game and spoke up. "I could pretend to have spots, and then Irina could be the lead mare."

Irina pricked up her ears hopefully, but the other three glared at Dante. Well no one ever said making friends was going to be easy, and he had to try.

  Mariana turned up her nose. "And that would leave Mateo as lead stallion. But I don't think Mateo wants Irina as his lead mare, do you Mateo?"

   "Yuck. No," Mateo responded.

   "Well that settles it. "I'll be lead mare, Mateo the stallion, Luciana the baby-"

  "-Again?" Luciana whined.

  " Yes, now hush. And Irina, you can be a guard. You're so much better at playing boy's roles anyway."

  But Dante wanted to play too. "What about me?"

"I know, I know!" Luciana exclaimed. "Dante can be an intruder."

  A horrible grin spread across Mateo's face. "Yes. What a splendid idea, Luci! And do you know what happens to intruders Dante?"

Dante grew uneasy and started to back away.

"They get beat-up by the lead stallion."

Dante bolted.

"I'll give you a ten second head-start," Mateo yelled after him, laughing.

  Irina tried to intervene, but she was blocked by Luciana. There was no one to help poor Dante.



* The two black fillies are Blanco's little sisters, the Twins, Mariana and Luciana. The bright bay colt is Dante's childhood nemesis: a Criollo named Mateo. I may or may not make ref sheets for them.
