What an amazing illustration; how did your color your pencil drawing in Photoshop?? It looks like it was painted with gouache or an airbrush-

Thank you very much for the compliment! Yeah, I colored it in photoshop. I just added flat colors on top of my pencils on a multiply layer. The pencil shading creates the illusion of different colors and tones when it's really just big sections of flat solid color.

I zoomed in this time and got a better look at the gauntlet.. Where'd you get your reference for that hun? I'm totally blown away by this...
You should do a tutorial or something on how to draw facial features (ie. noses and lips) properly, because yeah... I bet it'd be great...
Much love for Vash, once again <3

COOl, I'm so happy you feel that it looks like Vash! Some fans didn't think it fits, but that's alright, I welcome everyone's opinions. The only thing slowing down Knives is finding an appropriate background. I've drawn him already, I'm just trying to figure out what setting to put him in.
Any suggestions?

hmm...
I suppose it all really depends on what Knives is doing.
but here are a couple: On a cliff. In a space ship. I like the space ship one best. You know with tubing and panels all around. Or even in a plant room!

DaleNorvell In reply to Magnet-Rose [2005-09-30 23:19:23 +0000 UTC]
Well, Knives is just sitting there similar to Vash's portrait, except he's facing the opposite way, which was meant to be a bookend for Vash. you know, if you put the portraits side by side they would kinda mirror each other in a way. Vash is looking up with hope and Knives is looking down with condemnation. Knives was going to have the same kind of wall behind him too, but that doesn't make sense, because he would have no reason to be outside like Vash. He pretty much stays in his ship. Sooooo, I thought I would make a background showing he's in his ship, with something saying "Plant Containment" or something on the wall, and I'm at a loss as to how to design the wall.
Thanks for your ideas!

I so love this!
I love how you thought of adding so many details: the holes in his coat, his beauty mark, the silvery shine of the buttons and even his fingernails are so detailed! I also love how you did the wall. The coloring looks so natural there. And Kuroneko makes it perfect.
Now I'm off to gush over Legato and Wolfwood.

.... hmm... gonna have to say I liked the original coloring better. For myself, I felt it was more painterly (yes, I adored all the burning and doging) it looked like a watercolor, or an old-time watercolored photo, and had a uniqueness, a lightness that I felt was very appropriate for the "western old time realistic feel" of the piece. This does indeed look far more in keeping with the comic book feel; it's flatter, darker, stronger, far more vibrant with far less variety in the tonal ranges (especially the face which is colored nearly matte flat) and while this does acheive what you said you were trying to achieve, I liked the cooler, softer, more tonal watercolor feel of the other piece. (eek! forgive me my darling)

DaleNorvell In reply to AthenaTT [2005-07-22 23:58:03 +0000 UTC]
Wow, I really appreciate your honesty! I wasn't expecting you to like the old version better.
You think the old version had a watercolor feel? Hmmmmm. It's strange cuz I actually used MORE colors on this version, yet it appears to have less tone. I just used flats on the first one too, I just burned and dodged the hell out of it which gave the illusion of tones I GUESS. I'm still learning with all this stuff. Self-teaching. Forgive my ignorance.
What's kinda funny is you love the tone differences on Legato's face and hands, but I just colored him one solid flat matte color too. It's just the shading underneath that gives the illusion of tone. My pencil work. Vash hardly has any shading on his face.
Can ya gimme any color blending tips, or know where I cold get some? Remember, all I have is a mouse.

Found through another person's favorite. Beautiful, beautiful. I always love it when artists draw characters in their own style. Heh, I was thinking Brad Pitt, too, but he's really not tall enough, is he.
My only niggle would be the color of his eyes. They were such a wonderful sea-colored turquoise in the anime, and here they look a rather ordinary, human, blue. But that's nothing, really. I can't draw people at all.

Thank you very much for the !! I appreciate it! Did you see my Legato Bluesummers? I haven't submitted the color version yet, but I will.
I went back over my Vash drawing and corrected and darkened alot of the shading, so I'm going to re-color it again and I'll be able to correct his eye color, skin tone, and some little things I know that need to be fixed as well. I even added Kuroneko that cat as a drawing on the wall behind him. The changes will be most noticable in the black&white version of it though.
