Description
This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.In this case, Incredible Hulk #314
The original cover was created by John Byrne, copyright Marvel Comics.
Here is the original cover:

Thank you! I find that Byrne is one of the more difficult artists to adapt to with my inking style... I'm more of a Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez type of inker.

And I find the opposite, as my style naturally gravitates to a Byrne-like style. My inking is another story...

Great choice! Great comic! Great rendition! I think I still have this issue. John Byrne at the top of his game.

Thanks! Simulating whatever pen tip Byrne was using back then, with a brush, is difficult! I remember being disappointed when he dropped off the book after only about 5 or 6 issues and then Milgrom was on the art.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Actually the only thing that was disappointing about that series was the fact they managed to separate the Hulk from Banner. Even in comic book lore I couldn't swallow that. They were one in the same. But everything else I loved. I"ve always loved the way both Byrne and Kirby staged their action and fight scenes..............especially when it had crumbling rock in it. Would LOVE to won an original panel of either one of those two guys. I was very fortunate to purchase a page of Corbens' artwork when he did that wonderful Hulk mini series. I think I locked it in a vault 9 stories underground.

If I had a piece of Corben work, I would seal it in a frame behind UV-resistant glass so I could stare at it everyday. Nice!
I once had two pieces of Byrne art (among a bunch of other decent pages by a wide variety of classic artists...sold them all to pay bills, never actually paid the bills... I still cry about this to this day). One from FF #289, and one from West Coast Avengers #42 (his first ish). I got them at San Diego from his art dealer for something like $75 each. Wish I still had 'em.

Ohhhhh..........the pain of what I just read. I guarantee you, I doubt you'd get the same pages for $75 again. I wouldn't mind a Byrne piece. He's been one of my favorite artists. Maybe one day I can head over to San Diego. My brothers have been but I missed out. They said it was spectacular and that EVERYTHING that is ANYTHING to do with pop culture is there.

I went every year from 1995-2005, and the first few years of that were truly an amazing comic experience - I met so many of my favorite creators. It truly is a pop culture con at this point, though... comics included, but way more wide-ranging. Also, incredibly crowded and difficult to even get passes/hotel for. That's happened to all of the big west coast cons, they're just too huge and crowded for me to enjoy in my middle age.

I don't feel 100% comfortable in crowds........not for any extended period of time but I do think I would enjoy the buzz of it all. I"ll chance it!

Yeah, rubble is always "Fun" to do. Even moreso when it's still in motion.

Ah! Very nice Byrne rendition indeed! Back when Marvel was worth reading too!

His mid-80s era is the toughest, because he did all his inks with a felt pen - difficult to replicate with a brush!

You gave it the old college try, sir! And your use of brushes is a master class of it's own!
