Description
This is something I've been wanting to try for a while - a straight recreation (as opposed to the mash-up cover recreations I've done in the past) of the cover of one of the comics that helped change me into a comic fan as a kid.In this case, Thor 289. Nothing special to me about this one other than I thought it looked cool. I kinda wanted to do Thor 300, but it was one of those 1980-1981 issues that had the big ugly 'Toys R Us' banners above the logo. Pfff!
The original cover was created by Keith Pollard and Chic Stone, copyright Marvel Comics.

Have you ever done any Thor covers from the Simonson days?

Not yet, but I was considering doing #337 or #351 when I decided to do a Thor cover. I think what clinched my decision is that I like the 'old' Thor logo much better!

Sweet! A cover from the days when characters would be doing something, instead of just standing there. And they spoke too!

Yeah! 70s covers were the best.

Another winner Chris! Pollard was Marvel's workhorse back in those days. I hated those blasted ToysRus banners too!

Seriously, the guy did everything around 78-83...

I consider myself lucky that Keith is a native Detroiter and I get to see him a couple times a year. he has done some commission work for me in the past. A true talent.

You can thank Chic Stone for those, I just tried to replicate them as good as I could!

I love it, and what a great choice. You pick some amazing covers to tackle. Thank you for sharing.
I also despise those banners on comics then and now.

They've ruined some otherwise great covers... Thor 300, Avengers 200, Avengers 213, X-Men 151 & 153... blah.

Chasing the almighty dollar at the cost of ruining something good. Glad you didn't let that factor into this wonderful piece.

What a Masterpiece, you really nailed this one Chris!!!
I love how covers used to lead you into a story. With a single image, some dialogue, and without having read this story, I can put the plot together, and with your epic art, my mind's official blown. Outstanding

Thanks! I do try to get as close to the original as possible, so the true praise should go to Keith Pollard!

I'm not too familiar with Pollard's work, but he rocked this one. I'll keep an eye out for the name in the future.
Your work has been excellent lately, keep it up!
Do you have any interest in having any of these recreations colored? I don't know if you think I'm any good at coloring, but maybe we could collaborate some time. OR Maybe I could color your favorite recreation in an art trade, where you draw one of my characters again. Just something to think about, I know your probably pretty busy

You can feel free to color any of my B&W work that you want! I'll even provide higher res scans if you desire.
I never really got into Pollard's work back in the day (I was too focused on fancy-schmancy Byrne and Perez in the early 80s) but his work is SOLID.

Do you have a favorite, of the recreations, you've done?

Hard to say, as they're all covers of comics which are special to me. I think I did the best job on Doctor Strange 60, but I think my favorite one to look at is Green Lantern 106.
