Description My portion of an art trade with - her request was for something with the same theme as my faux-EC Weird Lumber cover.

I was at a loss of how to do a one-page forestry comic, but then I got an inspiration from thinking about the old Ripley's Believe it or Not strips (I used to read those paperbacks to tatters), and feature some Lumberjacky stuff.

Timber Joey is truly the mascot of the MLS Portland Timbers - I've seen him in action and it's a lot of fun when Portland scores a goal!

The Dungarvon Whooper is something I found while doing a search on logging folklore.

Paul Bunyan (at least the one most Americans think of) truly was played up into his modern incarnation by an advertisement - kind of like Santa Claus in the old Coca Cola ads.

This was a lot of fun, I think my style conjured up the old Ripley's theme pretty well!

Your style actually meshes perfectly with those Ripley's books. Man, those were great. And little did I know that, as a kid, I was being totally misinformed time and again about all those amazing facts. That's what I get for relying upon a rigorous scientific institute like Ripley's.

Thanks! It was easy to take those as gospel as a kid, after all they were in a book! Books are always right!

Love the old-school composition here, and the (informative!) content, and the shading! They're all so damn life-like...!!

I think old-school is my lot in my artistic life... wouldn't have it any other way, though!

Thanks!

Woah, am I a lucky girl or what?!!! I absolutely LOVE it, thanks so much Chris! Of course I know you never give anything but the best when you draw but I'm still totally gobsmacked by how fab this is. Beards! Axes! Checked shirts! It's got the whole shebang! And SO beautifully drawn.

Now I need to go read about the Dungarvon Whooper...

Holy Moses, I thought Paul Bunyan was one of those really old American legends dating back to the 1800's. Great stuff.

I didn't know that about Paul Bunyan. Do you guys have one of those giant statues of him in Portland? There are a lot of them in smaller cities in the northern states, but you guys might be too cosmopolitan.

dalgoda7 In reply to MichaelCleaves [2011-09-27 14:36:02 +0000 UTC]

But of course, we have one of those. On the corner of Interstate Ave. & Denver Ave.

Thanks!

How I missed that on my four (count 'em) trips to your fair city is beyond me. It's a giant statue for god's sake! I must have been in the wrong part of town...

Yep. I'm getting addicted to leaving dumb comments on that site too! Hey, while I'm thinking of it, did you ever receive that print of MANCLAM and, if so, how does it look?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dalgoda7 In reply to Huwman [2011-09-27 17:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I got it a while back - I thought I must have mentioned it on the Manclam page, but maybe not.

It looks great! it was printed on pretty heavy photo paper, and the print quality is very good. It's hanging on my wall next to some other prints.
