It's amazing how quickly this became obsolete.
The RPK was closed bolt, lighter, and simpler in design, so it replaced it as soon as it was designed and produced in the right numbers.

Also, many RPK parts were interchangable with AK. Soviet military elites were very interested in simplifying logistics.
