Moriz liked Aiden. More than liked him, perhaps. It was the first time he met someone who he could talk with at his level, and the first one that was willing to talk either. He cherished those early morning hours, when the lab was near empty before the early shift came in. It was the best time to discuss ideas. Aiden was usually open for them. He didn't mind the whole ethics aspect too much, though sometimes he had that look on his face. A look Moriz knew all too well. It was the same look his father used to have the rare moments he spend sober."A guilty conscience?" Moriz guessed.
Aiden didn't respond. He just stared into the depths.
Moriz sighed. "There's no need to. We're mere scientists. We don't bear responsibility over other people's lifes."
"Perhaps" Aiden replied, his tone suggesting doubt.
Moriz gave him a long look, but then turned around and carried on with his work. It was best to leave him be. Aiden was still young. He'd grow over it eventually. They all did.
Working on a lot of their backstory lately. This is back in the day when they were still friends instead of competitors.
Just trying out some things with color, composition, and whatnot to tell a story. Movies are my main inspiration for lighting and composition these days. It's really great to analyze shots and think about why it works.

It's only edge if it's meant to shock. It's not done with the reason to shock audiences.

That's not really what edgy means though. It's just when something is a lot darker than it has to be for no real reason other than it's cool or something. I'd hard to describe and I'm probably not putting it into words well, but trust me, A scientist who's only in it for the knowledge and also looks down on almost all other people for being stupid, left a hospital and his life saving work because the rules got in his way, and someone who doesn't care about the consequences of their discoveries is edgy. It's also people like Reaper from overwatch, Kayn from League of Legends, and Shadow the hedgehog. Kayn,in particular I'm familiar with; In one of his voice lines he says that the darkness that surrounds him is his armour, his weapon is a giant scythe, and as a kid he single handedly murdered an entire village. That's incredibly edgy, even though none of that is designed to shock the audience. I don't know how to explain it better than just giving examples sorry. Hope you get what I mean.

Absolutely. There's a lot of backstory. To most of the characters there is. Moriz hasn't had the nicest past. Makes him dislike humans and kinda explains his search for knowledge/power regardless of costs.

I'm sure with him it isn't just human compassion, but also logic. The act of conscience assists in not only maintaining a level that you wouldn't have to hide, it's easier to build upon and grow within the confines of government, society, and commerce.
Basically it maintains a right to practice in the eyes of humanity. When you think of scientists working with GMOs and Stem Cells, especially in the early years of the science, it was extremely difficult to experiment and learn. They were necessary steps that, especially in the case of stem cells, is moving into more acceptable arenas of development and so science with them is now taking off rapidly. If there had been more of a conscience around them earlier, I believe we would have been even further ahead.

I'm talking about real conscience here. Not the kind that's feigned to win the public's support. Aiden is very good with that too. He knows how to play that, but some of it is real.

Should it be termed "Aiden's downfall" because he lost whatever conscience, or "the rise of Aiden", precisely because he lost his consciousness? I think it depends on the perspective.

Aiden never lost his conscience. He just doesn't show it a lot. He mostly overrules it with logic.
And Moriz' past is rather dark. There's a reason he loathes people.

They're an interesting bunch, yeah. There's enough backstory to fill plenty of chapters, so there's definitely some character depth.
As for Moriz. Let's say he wasn't among the popular kids. People let him down a lot. Made him kinda sad.
