Description
Progress steps for this work:Sharing my rather chaotic painting process
I usually start out with a sketch. My sketching style is rather chaotic, but it's more about finding the lines than about making everything correct. I tend to erase as little as possible during sketching.
After sketching I block in values (black and white). This is mainly to see what works without getting distracted by all of the colors.
Third step is blocking in with colors. I usually get myself a new layer and use "color" as a blending mode. Sometimes I get through multiple color schemes until I find one that works.
Everything after that is just refinement and such

It didn't take that long for this painting, but it does take longer for paintings that have more detail going on ^^
I'm still learning how to do it as well

I'm still impressed by how clean it looks without making a neat lineart beforehand!
Just curious, for how long have you been making digital art?

I think for about 6 or 7 years pretty regularly, I think.
I did make some digital stuff before that, but it was very rare.

Wow that's long!
I've been drawing digitally for about 2/3 years now, but I'm still struggling to find a technique and a style I'm confident with. I love when you can tell who's the artist just by their style (like you, Yuumei, Kawacy etc.), it's a really big goal for me.

I'm not sure how it is for other artists, but I don't feel like I really have a set style (though a lot of people apparently say so).
I change my working process constantly and I feel like my art evolves all the time. The thing you refer to as style is probably all of my preferences added up over the years that resulted in a certain way of drawing stuff. If you draw for years, you go through multiple phases (and fandoms) and take a bit from every piece of art you like. Eventually that all adds up to what you end up making. Or at least... that's how it feels to me ^^

I completely agree, I think a "style" is built over years with little pieces of aspects you love from others' work. That's what I like about this website, there's so many good ways of drawing and expressing things! Seeing someone else's work can push you try new things that might end up being really interesting. I think it's good to always try and make your style evolve and not trying to have something completely still.
Thanks for explaining, it's really interesting !

I hope this is not a stupid question, but what do you mean when you say that you use "color" as a blending mode?

There is one thing i wanna ask. I guess you are working with Photoshop right? Why is the picture first in black and white and colored? I have seen a lot of artist doing this. Is this a better way to color things?

It's to get the values of the painting right without getting distracted by the colors.
If you pick any good painting and turn it to black and white, you'll notice that it looks pretty decent. That's because the values are good. If it doesn't look good in black and white, chances are it's not gonna look good in color either.

I'm amazed by how you use black and white first to get the values right. I get confused if I don't use colors when I'm advanced on a drawing x_x and I find hard to realize which part is which when working on it.

Step 3 to step 4 is some serious sorcery right there.

It's mostly going over it with a smoother brush :')

The end result is amazing though. I'm afraid to do straight up painting because I take ages and my end result looks flat and fuzzy and messy lol. I need my lineart. :'D

It's mostly about edges and everything.
Then again... I couldn't do lineart to save my life :')

Yeah I think I have trouble with the edges. And probably contrast.
Lol you're not missing out on lineart. I take ages to do it too. And then glare at every line because I'm fussy as heck about lines. Recently I've been doing sketches to just loosen up.

I tend not to use too many soft-brushes. I know people that use them very well, but for me they always turn out too fuzzy and I like the painterly effect of harder brushes a lot ^^

Ah, gotcha. I'll give that a try next time. I only ever use soft brushes, except when lining. Although sometimes I use them to line too.
