A little lore for those glowing crystals all over the Underground. Though as the biomes shifted they began to develop light of their own (Snowdin has northern lights-esque glow in the 'sky', Waterfall has glowing aqua pools, lava flooded the lower parts of Hotland) this change was not immediate, and so the monsters were trapped in perpetual darkness for a long time after being sealed under. One of the (many) reasons why Asgore was made king was due to the fact that one of his magic's primary abilities was giving off light, and when he took upon the mage's soul, that light became infinitely stronger.
But the push-and-pull of another person's soul inside of you is so painful that Asgore was forced to seek out another way to bring light to his people, and thankfully he found it, perhaps not a moment too soon. For who knows what a mage of that ability could do with the body of a Boss monster?
