Description
This is Lockheed Martin's F-16A Fighting Falcon originally lockheed before the merge with Martin, But it's not only lockheed Martin but also General Dynamics that took part in the creation of this Multirole Aircraft commonly used by the USAF and US Navy. But it's not without its export customers including Israel, Belgium, Poland and the Netherlands.
The Japanese have their own licence built version called the Mitsubishi F-2 although some are built by Lockheed Martin.
The F-16A is powered by 1 General Electric F110-GE-100 turbofan and armed with a single General electric 20 mm (0.787 in) M61 Vulcan Cannon with 511 rounds in the port side of the forward fuselage behind the cockpit.
The F-16 has 11 weapon pylons, 3 under the central fuselage beneath the engine intake, 8 wing set pylons, 6 under wing and 2 wingtip, amaments include.
For Air-to-Air the AIM-7 Sparrow medium range Air to Air Missile, the AIM-9 Sidewinder short range Air to Air Missile, the IRIS-T short range Air to Air Missile, the AIM-120 AMRAAM medium range Air to Air Missile and the Python-4 short range Air to Air Missile.
For Air-To-Surface the AGM-45 Shrike Anti Radiation Missile, the AGM-65 Maverick Air to Surface Guided Missile and the AGM-88 HARM Anti Radiation Missile but its not just land based targets the F-16 is designed for.
Anti-Ship Missiles include the AGM-84 Harpoon and the AGM-119 Penguin Littoral Anti Ship Missile.
The F-16 can also carry a variety of Rocket pods including the 7 round and 19 round LAU-61/LAU-68 Rocket pods with 19 Hydra 70 Rockets for the LAU-61 and 7 Hydra 70 Rockets for the LAU-68, the LAU-5003 Rocket pod with 19 CRV7 Rockets and LAU-10 Rocket Pod with 4 Zuni Rockets.
Other air to ground weapons include the following Guided and Cluster Bombs.
The CBU-87 Combined Effects Munition, the CBU-89 Gator Mine and CBU-97 Sensor Fuzed Weapon are the family of Cluster Bombs used by the Aircraft but they can be turned into guided weapons by the tail set Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser.
Guided Bombs include the GBU-10 and GBU 12 Paveway II Laser Guided Bombs and the JDAM.
Wait there are more unguided weapons, the Mark 82, Mark 83, Mark 84 low drag general purpouse bombs and back to guided there is the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb and a real bad boy the B61 Nuclear Bomb.
Now of course it needs protection so it can also carry countermeasures and targeting sensors plus Fuel.
The SUU-42A/A Flares/Infrared decoys dispenser pod and chaff pod, the AN/ALQ-131 & AN/ALQ-184 ECM pods, the LANTIRN, Lockheed Martin Sniper XR & LITENING targeting pods or
up to 3× 300/330/370 US gallon Sargent Fletcher drop tanks for ferry flight/extended range/loitering time.
I took this photo 25th July at the 2010 Farnborough Airshow.
