well you've got a stock. That's the picture you use in your sig. For example an girl standing in front of a building.
This stock can be made into a render. Then you cut out the background (or other things you don't want). So in this example you will only have the girl left.

Almost. Stock is the main picture you use. But if you cut it out like in this situation you call it a render
