Within minutes, Megan, Mary, and Julie all arrived. Cheryl watched their eyes widen in turn as they entered the classroom; as soon as all four girls were assembled, a detailed explanation of the situation was provided. The girls surrounded Cheryl, offering consolation as they could.
"I'll need some time to discern a solution," Ms. Featherstone explained. "For now, I think you could all use some time to commiserate and support each other. After the last couple of days, I'm sure you need it. If any of you aren't otherwise indisposed, please come check on dear Cheryl when your other classes are finished. We could likely use your help by then!" She withdrew from the classroom, the sound of her clacking heels diminishing as she drew closer to her office.
"Well, so much for class...again." Cheryl lamented. "This isn't turning out exactly like we hoped, is it?"
"No," Megan replied. "First that jerk Vivian shows up, keeping us from learning any spells. Now this!" she gestured to Cheryl's hair cocoon.
"You don't suppose there's a connection there?" Mary chimed in.
Julie's heart started racing. She sat silently, quietly torn. Her YouTube idol, Vivian, abusing her and Megan almost from the first instant they had met, had rattled her. She had wanted a friend like Megan for so long, it would have been so perfect if they had all gotten along; Julie was quickly learning that becoming close to people wasn't always sunshine and rainbows.
"Ms. Featherstone and I discussed it," Cheryl answered. "So far, we don't believe that to be the case."
Julie immediately felt relieved. Still, she thought out loud. "Is it always going to be like this? Curses and monsters and stuff?" She undid her own massive messy bun as she spoke, caressing her hair. "I think it's worth it, it would just be nice to not be worried about this kind of thing all the time. I'm so sorry we weren't able to help before the imp queen got to you."
"Don't blame yourself," Cheryl reached out to Julie and squeezed her hand. "In fact, I want you to continue today with the connection spell we started the other day. I think it's sorely needed right now."
"How?" Dawn asked. "We can't exactly braid our hair together with yours this time..."
"We'll make do," Cheryl smirked. She guided the girls into weaving their four heads of hair together, with Cheryl holding the ends of their hair in her own hands. "This can't go any worse than last time," she admitted.
"Now, everyone close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. In...out...in...out." Cheryl's necklace began to radiate as she began the incantation from before, magic flowing from Cheryl's fingers into the girls' tresses. Her voice softened, close to a whisper.
"The four of you share more than wondrous heads of hair," she said softly. "These are the things to focus on in order to strengthen a connection spell." The girls listened intently to Cheryl's words as their breathing slowed, their minds approaching a meditative state.
"I can already start to feel a connection to each of you," she began. "Dawn, you feel as if you never quite fit in with others in this school, and wonder if it will be the same in this group." Dawn's eyes almost opened, but the spell that brought a tingling to her scalp was incredibly soothing. She continued to listen. Cheryl went on. "I see the strength in you. You have the potential to do greater things than you ever thought capable. Your friends here see it too."
They all felt the spell grow stronger. "Megan," Cheryl continued in a soft tone, "you feel you have little to offer above your skin-deep cheerleader image." Julie felt a slight tug on her own hair as Megan stiffened slightly beside her. "But it was you who discovered Julie was under an evil influence before even Ms. Featherstone did. You befriended her, and your marvelous heart and mind helped save her life."
Julie's hand reached over and clasped Megan's. Julie felt a tear fall from Megan's face, and run inbetween their entwined fingers. They all felt the spell continue to increase in power.
"Mary," Cheryl whispered. "You felt powerless after losing your hair. Then you allowed yourself to feel guilty for mourning its loss, as if it shouldn't have meant so much to you. If anyone can understand your feelings, and empathize with them, it is us. We also feel the determination you have to never feel so helpless again. Your determination empowers us."
Power coursed through the girls, magic flowing through their hair, their life forces as entwined as the braids connecting them.
"Julie," Cheryl grinned. "Even more than the hair you have been gifted, what you have craved all your life is to be wanted and loved." Julie felt a chill run through her. Having her feelings examined like this made her feel almost naked. Yet she felt safe here, as well, even in her vulnerability. Cheryl continued, "Your capacity to love exceeds perhaps that of anyone I've met. Someday you will appreciate the tremendous power that gives you. For now, know that we accept your love, and return it freely."
A final burst of energy surged through them. Megan's grip on Julie's hand tightened fiercely, letting her know that, in a sense, she would never let go.
Tears flowed freely as the spell dissipated. New energy filled the room. These girls were part of a true sisterhood now. Cheryl had given them a gift.
Not wanting it to end, not a word was spoken for almost the next half hour as the girls unbraided the configuration of tresses they had created, then finished the class period brushing and arranging each others' hair for the day. It was another small bonding moment on top of the one they had just experienced. All embraced before departing to their other classes.
----------------------------------------------------
Cheryl sat alone in her classroom. She held her necklace in her hand and looked at it. "Yes...that went well, didn't it? It's about time I started pulling my weight around here."
Speaking of weight, as the day progressed, it was becoming obvious that the imp queen was not done with her. The weight on her neck was actually becoming noticeable. This must be what normal long-haired girls feel like, she thought as she rubbed her neck. Had the imp queen siphoned so much of her magic? Maybe casting spells with the girls earlier today wasn't as good an idea as she thought.
She quickly pushed the thought out of her mind. The spell was needed, and it worked fantastically. She had no regrets. Unfortunately, though, she caught her reflection in a mirror on the wall, and gasped as she realized her hair cocoon had almost doubled in size! The imp queen had taken enough magic to even grow her hair quickly. More magic hair meant more nourishment for her young, apparently.
Normally this would be a welcome development; twenty feet of hair had, at first, seemed like a lot to her. But her experiences helping other women in her mission, that of cultivating the beauty and power of their long hair, had created a sort of hunger in her to somehow grow hers out more.
However, right now Cheryl felt ill. Helping the girls had made her forget her own phobia of things crawling around in her hair for a bit. Now her uneasiness was back in full force. The next several hours were torture as she waited for the school day to end.
She wondered if her large locks would even fit through the double-doors she'd entered through this morning...
-----------------------------------------------------
As the closing bell rang, Cheryl didn't have to wait long for the girls to rejoin her. Their bond with her was becoming stronger, as they wordlessly embraced her as they entered the classroom, not mentioning the foreboding size of her hairdo.
Ms. Featherstone promptly arrived, carrying a small vial of purple liquid, which appeared to have the consistency of dish soap. "This is a test batch of a sort of shampoo I've been able to concoct." Not being able to use her own magic, she did have a store of magical ingredients that could act on their own in an attempt to counteract the imp queen's powerful resin.
"If you please, could you girls grab the stepstool from the closet over there?" Joanna gestured to the back of the room. It was quickly retrieved and placed behind Cheryl as she sat in a chair. The vial was given to Julie as she reached the top step. She stumbled for a split second, and Dawn quickly reacted, holding Cheryl's hair in place as Julie steadied herself upon it.
"That's it," Ms. Featherstone spoke as Julie poured. The liquid oozed down Cheryl's massive do. "If we can create a weak spot, it might be enough to somehow extract Cheryl's invaders."
The liquid slowed, seemingly absorbing into the mass of hardened hair.
"Is it working?" Mary asked.
"Wait.." encouraged Ms. Featherstone.
Cheryl hated waiting. She would learn soon, however, to be careful what she wished for...

What if a god were to hatch out? Then, that would make it a "Kami no kami".

It's a Japanese play on words. "Kami" can meaning either "hair" or "god", depending on the kanji.
