Description
A portrait of my friend Hannah as the Greek goddess Persephone. I imagined her as that because she is one of those people who exudes light and kindness even when things around them are going to hell. I wanted to capture that inner light of hers as well as her extraordinary beauty and grace.
For those unfamiliar with the legend of Persephone here's a short summary: she was the beautiful daughter of the nature goddess Demeter. The god of the underworld, Hades, got infatuated with her and seduced her away from her guardians with a daffodil flower, then swept her away to his kingdom. Her mother got really upset, which caused huge natural calamities, droughts, and famine. Eventually Zeus was forced to act to counteract the massive death toll and negotiated an agreement with Demeter and Hades - Persephone would stay half of the year in the Underworld and the rest with her mother. The legend says she couldn't leave completely because Hades tricked her into eating six kernels of a pomegranate, which bound her to his home.
This is why I put her half in light and half in shadow. Also as queen of the underworld, who is often seen as a protector of the lost souls, I wanted to make them look respectful and loving, despite their grotesqueness.
