Description
Here's a character idea I had in my head for a while. Here are two new additions to the Roseburg & Western, just in from south of the border, Lorenzo and Miguel. Enjoy and feliz cinco de mayo to all my Spanish viewers, or anyone else who celebrates it.
Lorenzo is an NdeM(Nacionale de Mexico) QR-1 class 4-8-4, built in 1946 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA. Miguel is an NR-1 class built in 1937 by the American Locomotive Co.(aka Alco) in Schenectaty, NY. Both of them were built to serve the rugged country of Mexico. Lorenzo usually pulled freight while Miguel usually did passengers, but the two did occasionally switch jobs when needed. In the early 1960s, steam was being withdrawn and scrapped all over Mexico. Determined to not suffer such a horrible fate, Lorenzo and Miguel began hiding out in yards, warehouses or wherever else they could til the heat was off, gradually working their way north to the United States, and doing what they could to help other fellow steamers. They were just short of the Texas border when their luck ran out....or so they thought. The manager of the Roseburg & Western Railroad was looking for a new engine for the line, he caught wind of the two Mexicans on the run from the scrappers, just south of the border. He swooped in on them just in the nick of time, as they were about to be taken away to be scrapped. The manager only needed one engine for the railroad, but out of loyalty for each other, Lorenzo and Miguel still refused to go with him unless the both of them went together. The manager reluctantly gave in and brought them to Roseburg.
Nowadays, the two have proven to be reliable assets to the R&W, with Miguel helping out Jamie with the cannonball services, and Lorenzo helping out with freight, occasionally taking the Nighthawk for Daniel. When the two are together just sitting around, the two often crack jokes, talk about the old days in Mexico and life in America, the latter of which can occasionally lead to comedic rants about the things they don't like about America, and modern society in general. Every now and then, the pair also give Spanish lessons to both engines and workers who are willing to listen.

Thanks. You'll find a lot of Hispanics here in the South. There is even a good sized group that comes to my church and are good friends of ours.
