thanks! i'm trying to explore all the coloring options cause i'm not so good with inking or photoshops. copics are my tool.

What I like to do is use copics for all of my greyscales - using the warm, cool, and flat greys, then in photoshop just doing flat color and hilights. It's taken me a while to get to that point of working that way, but I know a lot of other comic professionals tend to work this way, and rather quickly.

thanks! my other question is, scanning. how do you guys get such good quality when you scan the picture into the comp?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanielGovar In reply to pillowtags [2011-04-21 15:19:04 +0000 UTC]

I generally scan everything at 600 dpi. I also adjust the contrast and levels in photoshop to get my blacks and whites to look the way they should. All scanners are different. Some are better than others...I prefer Epson - a cheap Epson can be better than an expensive other brand.

aaah! so it is partly because my scanner suckz!!

DanielGovar In reply to pillowtags [2011-04-21 15:25:42 +0000 UTC]

may be. Some are really bad - I've used HPs, Dells, and others - Epsons seem to be the best I've found.

I know some folks use Fedex to scan their stuff. They don't charge much and generally can give a hi-res scan. Hope it helps!

That would be beyond way-too-awesome to get to ride a dragon while fighting giant robots!!

Thanks! Yeah - Im not sure which I'd want more - legion of robots or flying dragon. I'm thinking the robots would need a lot of maintenance.

seriously, go with the dragon, and you could go everywhere! you could even tow one of those flags you see behind an airplane, it would say:

Dear Oil Companies: (pic of middle finger)

I personally would travel all over the world and just hang out at warm/hot exotic locations... who knows, maybe paint my skin blue... not like anyone could stop me, CUZ IM FLYIN A DRAGON!

Dragons versus robots? Fantastic combination.

And it only took you five hours to color? That is awesome!

DanielGovar In reply to Egon-Riker [2011-04-20 05:17:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the inking was longer on this one than the color work. Most of the gradient areas were actually handled by the greytones I put in so it used mostly flat colors with hi-lights.

Thanks LJ! I do think the colors help to seperate some of my muddier blacks.

Hehe! Well, it is pretty fantastic, I think. There's so much movement and action in this piece. I also love the contrasts of light and dark that you often use. Tell me, did you colour this digitally or is it watercolour or other?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanielGovar In reply to IreneLangholm [2011-04-20 17:14:31 +0000 UTC]

Thankee, thankee. I was half tempted to put in motion blurs, but thought against it at the last moment. This is done digitaly - the color. most of the gradients and washes in the sky were done with ink washes in the black and white phase. (linked in the description)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanielGovar In reply to JonathanWyke [2011-04-20 05:14:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate! I was worried I had gone too dark on the inks in some areas and had - which is where some of the color washes come in over the sentinel to bring her and lockheed out more. It was intended, but I think I might have gone a little too far with the darker regions.
