Description
This piece is finally done. The next time I show this it will be oiled and have the mirror in it. Should be sometime next week.
This is a unique piece of redwood approx 54" X 18". Those that have been watching the progression know it has been just about a year since I started this. Sometimes it's hard to let go.......Thanks for viewing.

Great job!Β Nothing like a mirror that looks back at you! Β I assume you live near the redwoods, is this something you can forage for?

Thanks, my Friend. I am in Oregon.....plenty of redwoods, however, people bring me all kinds of different burls and pieces of rough wood. Redwood happens to be one of my favorite things to carve on. I almost always carve on redwood. Redwood burls are protected by law. Consequentially, I have only carved on redwood burl a few times.

About two years ago I was at an antique fair in Boston and one booth with lots of big chunks of wood caught my eye, in particular there were a few reddish brown burls.Β I asked the species, but there was a big language barrier with the vendor (I believe she was Chinese).Β At first she said 'redwood', but she called her husband and he said 'cherry'.Β I was excited to have a cherry burl and it seemed like a good price ($20 for a two foot burl), so I got it.Β Later on I read about people poaching redwood burls and I started to have my doubts about it being cherry.Β In part it could be my ignorance about wood and burls, but most of the cherry I have seen has the tell-tale lighter sapwood and there is no evident sapwood in this burl.Β But, perhaps burls don't have sapwood in the same way??
I've uploaded some photos, would you mind taking a look to see if you can ID the species??:

Thank you, but it's just a photo from my shop; no background necessary. I will post a clean photo when I am finished with this piece.

A stunning result. Everything is of a high standard: composition, expression, techniques, even the 'nothing' (hole) which echoes (to me) the shape of the face.
