Hallo Daniel

Somebody else recently asked me that as well and, to be honest, no. It takes a different set of tools/burs, bits, etc, not to mention the dust which is often toxic...not really my thing. I have a great respect for stone carving. It's just not for me. Thanks for asking and thanks for viewing my work.

Aaaa this inspires me so much!
I've wanted to carve a Kali mask for a while, for a dear friend of mine, and everytime I see your art I wanna try it and i want it more and more, but idk how to even start! ;;
i have birch-tree and some oak, which one do you think is better to start carving something? Not going to start with the mask obviously, I'd start with something less complicated >.>

That's a good idea. I've never carved on Birch, but I carve on Oak all of the time, especially oak burl. If you want a complete and 3-d, it would be a good idea to use hard wood; burl would be the best. You want something very hard that will hold it's shape with fine detail. The type of material you use, of course, has everything to do with the carving.
Also, the types of tools you use will influence the type of carving you do. For instance, you will need heavy tools to get the basic shape started; and, how you do this will take practice....practice, practice....ha ha....I've been carving for about 20 years and I still am simply practicing.
Another thing about carving; When I'm going to carve something complicated or new, I will draw it many, many, times before I even start the carving. Drawing helps the brain to put the idea 'together' so to speak and gets the hands/eyes coordinated. Drawing is essential in my opinion.
I hope this is helpful. There is a lot of 'stuff' related to carving. It also takes practice finding the proper materials. As I said, practice, practice, practice.....ha ha...my best to you, my Friend.

Beautiful piece of wood indeed. Is it the place where you work ? How do you work ? I mean, how do you choose the right place to start your carving ? Do you prepare your wood before starting your work ? Can you explain it ? (or is it a secret between you and this Redwood ?)
I'm (a little) confused to ask you but I'm really fascinated by your art and all the process ! This shot you took has awake my curiosity. Sorry...

Yes, this is at the gallery where I 'play'.....work is a four letter word.....ha ha.....When I show you my work, it is often inside my shop at the gallery.
Some pieces of wood will 'hang around' in my shop for a long time before I know what the wood wants me to carve. Yes, what the wood wants. Part of my art involves being able to 'listen' to the wood. I often don't know ahead of time what a carving will be.
Yes, I do prepare the wood. I clean it up, shape it, and consider the composition of my idea. More often than not, my idea will change....ha ha....It's important to 'flow' with the wood and not try to enforce my 'will' on it.
I don't hide any 'secrets'....ha ha. It takes a great deal of practice. This art is not just about carving but about my own Energy and the Magic of this universe. At least, that is how it is for me. It becomes a philosophy.
No reason to apologize. I appreciate your interest in my art. You are awesome, my Friend.

Ha ha, I get asked that all of the time and I really can't answer because I don't know. I carve several carvings at a time. One, which you may have heard of on this site is 'Gip's Hawk.' I've been working on that one for about a year. Of course, not by itself but along with many other carvings that don't take as long or aren't as involved.
When my Sweetie and I were on the road, I met a person who carved faces but his 'schtick' was being able to carve a face in 15 minutes. Well, I tell you, the carvings look like they were done in 15 minutes....ha ha.....but, people would buy them and he was happy. I've 'competed' with people who bought carvings in Mexico and then bring them up here to sell at increasingly cheap prices.
I had to ask myself why I carve. Is it for the money??????.....Hell no! I carve for my spirit....to express myself in as creative a way as I am able. This transcends money. For me, money is a bad reason to do something....money is an illusion; what is real is the essence and the Energy involved and the emotional context. The illusion of money has nothing to do with this. To me, what is real and important is the essence of life...the intangible, creativity, Joy, and Love. These things cannot be quantified....only felt.
Am I babbling yet?.........

I hear you, brother!! I'm extremely happy for you, honestly, my friend. Too many people--even when it comes to art -- don't find the fulfillment of things because the money gets in the way. Babble all you want!! Well said!
