Ruis paused at the edge of the harsh stinging desert, to take stock of her coming journey. Delicate nostrils supped the air’s scents, taking in a world of information about the alien environment. Her short hackles rose at what she found, and she sneezed in distaste. The air was dead. She smelled nothing but heat, the arid sand, and the companions she traveled with. This was no place for the living. Gone were the arctic winds of her home, bitter to the bone, but rich with the scents of life. Rabbits, warm in their burrows… Deer, wandering the forests in search of forage… The great bears, deadly foes that they were… all were missing in this desperately dangerous place. Ruis was unable to smell even the smallest hint of water.

“We have to cross that?” the man beside her exhaled in dismay. She whined at her handler, sensing his deep unease, and ran a massive tongue over his mass of hair before letting it loll from her mouth in an anxious pant. Vignir sighed before patting the Tokota next to him.

“We’ll be fine… at least it’s warm, right?” Ruis side-eyed the Satyr smirking beside her and huffed.  A shadow passed silently over her eyes, and she looked up at the small crow winging lazy circles above their heads. It cawed at her attention, dipping playfully at her face before quickly back-winging at her answering snap and riding the thermals once more to the safety of the blinding sky. Vignir laughed at the exchange. “Not in the mood, huh girl?” he ribbed. Ruis turned her attention back to the hostile landscape they were to cross, a fierce determination filling the sphinx. She WOULD be Alpha.

Lifting her massive head to the sky, Ruis howled a challenge to the desert. Her call echoed over the dunes in an eerie response she knew to be an acceptance of her defiance. Finally, something she recognized. This land would try to kill her, she knew, but so what? There was no food here. But hadn’t she survived many an arctic winter, hunger clawing at her belly in the cold? There was no water here. But she had known nights where the snow refused to melt in the frigid temperatures, the frozen water mocking her thirst. She was the master of her land, lording over the frozen landscape. An apex predator beholden to none but the fiercest snow bears. Ruis was Tokota. This place would soon come to learn what that meant.

“All right girl, let’s get this show on the road.” Vignir shouldered his pack and stepped from her shadow into the unforgiving sun. Ruis wagged her stumpy tail in affection for her handler, pride swelling in her chest. Together, there was no way they could fail. She fixed her eyes on the hazy horizon in the distance, watching it undulate in the heat waves. The crow quorked above her, and lit off for the unseen end of their journey. The bird would show her the way, she knew, as she padded softly into the sand.

So this is where the Sahara meets the Northern Mexican Badlands beyond the Colorado and Rio Grand Rivers.
