Description
I'm in the process of creating my capstone project to finish my art degree. I chose to do a series of single panel comics satirizing common "compliments" that women get that are often completely well meaning, but also are dehumanizing that distill us down to our basic reproductive function. Around 10 years ago, I was managing a restaurant and was speaking to one of my regular customers about one of my employees going back to school and how great that was for him. I mentioned that I wanted to go back to school someday to get a degree, and the woman said to me that I wouldn't have to worry about that. I would find a husband and have lots of children to take care of, and that I had childbearing hips and having kids would be easy for me. I abruptly excused myself and spent the next few hours fuming about only being good for breeding, and then I let it go and moved on with my life. It took another 4 years, but I did end up getting back in school. My goal is to show how rediculous and back-handed some of these "compliments" can be, as well as to remind myself and others not to take them too seriously. If you have a compliment you'd like to share, you can feel free to comment, or drop me a note!

Great project. I am very curious to see the next image.
As a man I usually don't get compliments like that.
I think I have some for you nevertheless.
When I was single, people used tell me about girls I should date. Every time they described the girl as "nice", that ment they could not think of any other trait on her that a boy could like.
In germany we have a saying that could be translated to: "Nice is the little brother of shit."
And then there is this classical compliment to make a woman feel better instantly: "You are so cute when you are angry."

Thank you! My next panel is actually a variation on "You're so cute" xD I'm about halfway through with the second panel, so I should have it uploaded soon.
I so agree about "nice". That's one of those compliments that cuts across pretty much all demographics too lol.
It's a shame that we consider something that means generally pleasant and assume it means boring or ugly.

Gotta love being insulted on many layers... I guess yay for multitasking?

If it wasn't for the fact that offline I'm a chicken tender I would have fired back with something similar. You DON'T tell people those sorts of things; they act like I'm so mentally incapitated that I won't see it as an insult.

Omg this is amazing haha absolutely love the concept! I can't think of a similar ridiculous "compliment" right now, but yeah this is just brilliant ^^

I have no such "compliments" to share, but I deeply appreciate this project, as I have become more and more frustrated the last few years with how mindlessly these depreciatory comments are passed on in society and onto new generations (including my own sons). Words shape reality, so we must be carefull with them.
On a second thought: it may be a bit different, but I really am weary with this "Oh don't be like that, it wasn't meant that way, it was only a joke/compliment, don't be hysterical" that I usually get in respons when I call someone out on this subject.

Ugg... hysterical... I just love being called hysterical. It really makes me calm down and see common man sense, ya know?

I hate being called hyterical since it's just as diminishing as all the other comments. It ends all dialog, since it takes away the value of my point of view.
Oh, and I really hate "That's mens work." (or the opposite "That's womens work." I do every work that needs to be done and that I am capable of.) I even had to have this conversation with my mum ... "It was just a joke, you know that!" - yes, mum, I know. But did my boys understand the joke-part? Or have they just learned that there er tasks they should or can not do because it's for some unknown reason inappropriate? You always have to watch your words when kids are around, they might pick up some foul language.

I know what you mean. One of my planned panels riffs on the fact that people legitimately think it's impressive when a woman can do "men's work" or has interests that fall into that masculine category (like changing a tire, or being a "legitimate" sports fan). I once had my boss's boss tell me he was impressed I knew the difference between a phillips head and a flat head screwdriver...

Sounds like a cool project. Personally I don't get a lot of compliments like that (maybe 'cause I try to avoid my family members at all cost & look like death), but the few I remember are:
- "Oooh, I see our Zofia has done her makeup!" (when I never in my life used makeup, I just have naturally dark eyelashes)
- *instert subtle comments how I'm basically a mother in making just 'cause I take care of my whiny cat*
- "Ooh of course, it will change once you'll marry honey *wink*" (when I introduce myself to some family member I meet for the first time and they learn my surname)

Pfft xD
It always kills me how ingrained makeup is in our society.

Yeah, and the need to look pretty all the time in general. I get not wanting to look like you live under a bridge, but there are girls who say they'd never leave their house without makeup on their faces. I can't imagine living like that.

Oh and I get comments from parents how my motherly intincts must be kicking in 'cause I make the characters I draw very child-looking, I don't have to explain why it's dumb as hell
