Those hands are magnificent!! Well, 'that hand' is more accurate. Just love the picture....

This is beautiful. I love the constant motion and the vibrant colors and the way you softly suggest things instead of painting them in full-on detial. I'd have to agree, though, for you to add a bottom panel, as it doesn't really register at first glance that your hand is resting on your knee.

Your painting (verb) is wonderful. You have such an understanding of the medium...
I would want to see another panel. I agree that it looks a little awkward as it is, but the second panel would do interesting things to the space break-up as well, especially if it was relatively thin.

really nice piece of work, great expression on the face. I find self portraits done with a mirror really difficult, as I tend to transfer my look of intense concentration onto the canvas and make myself look to harsh. I think you have avoided this well, instead your expression looks thoughtfull with a hint of sadness in the eyes...

Well done, captures a very efective overall mood if you ask me, I wouldn't add to it personally, very successful as it is.

awesome painting. i love the style, it has the slight fuzzyness effect you get from some digital cameras. painting from life is just too difficult for me, so im quite envious of how skilled you are at it. good job dude

lengthening the bottom seems like a good opportunity to run a little more shadow along down there and give it a kind of glow... or maybe i'm just being cheesy

now THIS is my kind of painting! good style~

the hand is especially well painted, but it seems a bit too small to me

danjacob In reply to star234gurl [2007-07-13 16:53:50 +0000 UTC]

keep in mind that my carpals and metacarpals are foreshortened. also in terms of spacial relationship to my head, they weren't very far from it. in any rate, put your hand to your face. you'll see it stretches from your chin to about your hair line. now take a measurement of just my finger (which isn't fully stretched out), and compare it to my face in the portrait.

star234gurl In reply to danjacob [2007-07-14 00:32:21 +0000 UTC]

true, the fingers are fine lengthwise, i think i'm seeing the smallness by the wideness... at any rate the bottom left corner of the pic throws me off, because it seems that the hand should be even bigger if the elbow bends there. it's difficult to tell whether the green area indicates some sort of reflective light upon the arm or indicates the background.

danjacob In reply to star234gurl [2007-07-14 05:00:13 +0000 UTC]

my arm was originally resting against my head. things tend to get painted over and moved around while i paint. i liked the not-so-vagueness of the remaining flesh colors suggesting a movement perhaps? or maybe as just a kind of dated event within the time line of the picture. does that make sense?

while i don't necessarily have too much trouble paying attention to the whole of the image, it is the little romanticized elements (such as: the abrasion on my cheek in shadow caused by sanding the image down before repainting and the kind of 'ghost image' of where my arm was) that are important to me.

as for the foreshortened arm and such; the image isn't complete. i plan on adding another panel and will inevitably be jumping back and forth between the two.
