DeviantArt is teaming up with Battle For The Net , the campaign to fight for net neutrality. We need weaponized artworks to drive home the message.


July 12th will be a day of coordinated grassroots efforts across the net to bring attention to the shadowy efforts of powerful cable industry forces to do away with net neutrality — a rule that protects open and equal access to the net by all publishers. We will join alongside sites like Reddit, Twitter, Amazon, Vimeo, Netflix, Soundcloud, and many others in activating our memberships to stand together for net neutrality.

We’re asking deviants to create art that other deviants and Internet warriors can share on July 12th. Your art may also be selected to be distributed far and wide by the official Battle For The Net campaign. Make your voice heard through your art!

The FCC wants to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, they’ll allow widespread throttling, blocking, censorship, extra fees and discrimination in favor of the rich publishers who can afford to pay for the fast lane.

The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas with a level playing field for all kinds of content. Without real, enforceable net neutrality rooted in the legal foundation known as Title II, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider gets paid to put in front of you by powerful corporate media interests.


HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  • Get inspired by visiting Battle For The Net to learn more about the initiative.

  • Create an image that embodies the campaign for net neutrality—some examples have been included below. Use strong phrases like the ones suggested, and make sure your image would be impactful if shared on social media. When possible, include the BattleForTheNet.com URL into the image or description that accompanies it.

  • Include the tag # BattleForTheNet when you submit your art. When you use this tag you agree the art can be used by anyone (or any organization) promoting net neutrality.

    You are correct, no one wants to pay more for anything, but based on my understanding of the NPRM I do not believe we as consumers would notice any difference if the FCC accepted the current version, the current version doesn't look like it touches Net Neutrality at all.

    I can't load the initiative's page so this may be on there...

    John Oliver made a direct link to the FCC's website so you can crash their servers tell them directly how much you like or dislike net neutrality.  The FCC has made it incredibly difficult to even express dislike for the bill on their site since when this was previously put before us, we found their site too easy to navigate and crashed their servers.  Smart people made the site below to let you bypass all the hoops.

    Art is always powerful and amazing, but please post resources with your artwork to give your opinions to the FCC or senators or other law makers directly with it.  So if someone is moved by the art, they can do something about it.  Cause the FCC isn't gonna search for our art / opinions.

    Thank you.    It seems like so many people are against certain laws / bills / legislation nowadays....  No one really knows what to do about it.  Luckily, I was in FBLA, and my teacher taught us how simple it was to just call a senator or write in.  Our government and law makers sometimes want to make it difficult, though, and are good at getting people to do things against their best interest.

    To anyone reading, you deserve happiness and health and most definitely a free and open internet!  You already pay for a plan!

    Take over? It's theirs to begin with, what doesn't make sense from a business standpoint is blocking sites that customers want to access, if they do those customers will switch ISPs and they'll lose money.  Moreover before 2015 (when Net Neutrality was put into place) companies voluntarily opted to neither block nor throttle sites because doing so would put them at a disadvantage to their competitors.

    "We emphasize that we oppose blocking lawful material. The Commission has repeatedly found the need for a no-blocking rule on principle, asserting that “the freedom to send and receive lawful content and to use and provide applications and services without fear of blocking is essential to the Internet’s openness.”" - FCC in the NPRM.
