DeviantArt is teaming up with Battle For The Net , the campaign to fight for net neutrality. We need weaponized artworks to drive home the message.
July 12th will be a day of coordinated grassroots efforts across the net to bring attention to the shadowy efforts of powerful cable industry forces to do away with net neutrality — a rule that protects open and equal access to the net by all publishers. We will join alongside sites like Reddit, Twitter, Amazon, Vimeo, Netflix, Soundcloud, and many others in activating our memberships to stand together for net neutrality.
We’re asking deviants to create art that other deviants and Internet warriors can share on July 12th. Your art may also be selected to be distributed far and wide by the official Battle For The Net campaign. Make your voice heard through your art!
The FCC wants to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, they’ll allow widespread throttling, blocking, censorship, extra fees and discrimination in favor of the rich publishers who can afford to pay for the fast lane.
The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas with a level playing field for all kinds of content. Without real, enforceable net neutrality rooted in the legal foundation known as Title II, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider gets paid to put in front of you by powerful corporate media interests.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Get inspired by visiting Battle For The Net to learn more about the initiative.
Create an image that embodies the campaign for net neutrality—some examples have been included below. Use strong phrases like the ones suggested, and make sure your image would be impactful if shared on social media. When possible, include the BattleForTheNet.com URL into the image or description that accompanies it.
Include the tag # BattleForTheNet when you submit your art. When you use this tag you agree the art can be used by anyone (or any organization) promoting net neutrality.
Comment on this article with a link to your deviation.
SOME IDEAS
- Illustrate the cable and telephone companies throttling Web developers

EXAMPLE PHRASES
- Save the Internet!
- Join the fight to save the Internet!
- Stop the Internet slowdown!
- Keep the Internet weird. Defend net neutrality!
- If you're not freaking out about Net Neutrality right now, you're not paying attention.

We should call on the Democratic state attorney generals to sue the FCC chairman Ajit Pai for threatening to remove net neutrality.

It honestly is quite suspicious that these pro-NN ads don't state the other side's view. Whether it's true or not, they must at the very least have some BS reason to being common people onto their side. If said reason is indeed false, it should be noted here and disproven. If said reasons are legitimate, then they might cause people reading this to go to the other side. Thus, the only reason for a page like this not to show the other side's theoretical propaganda...is that the FCC and large companies actually have a reasonable point against Net Neutrality. I'm going to research what they have to say and mark their points down in another comment shortly.

There's no need for the other side's point of view. You know what happens without net neutrality? You CAN'T view most things you like. Think of Netflix having to pay so that they won't have their data transfers slowed down? Who will have to pay for that? Netflix' subscribers.

So, no matter what I say, you won't be convinced. You've certainly set yourself up well to shut down literally any opposition. Unfortunately, you've also shut yourself off from any education on the matter.

I'm not sure. I haven't read up on the subject. If there's no information that supports their argument, then that argument is most likely wrong. Likewise, all of the information I have seen contradicts the claims for Net Neutrality being a good thing.

OF course there is information that supports their argument. What information do you have that says net neutrality is a bad thing? You do realise that net neutrality makes it possible for you to watch your favourite sites and for small companies to actually get their name out there and sell products easier via the internet? Without net neutrality the ISP can reduce the data transfer rate from a site and ask for more money from that site to raise the data transfer speed to the former level? It happened to Netflix.

I joined just because but you do have a point. Why is it they are making them look like monsters??? Personally I don't trust anything interfering with the net neutrally but questions still have to be asked. What are they going for?? And yeah I read the second comment you made stating what you found.
I think it'd be hard to take it back out of the FCC's hands if they got a-hold of the internet wouldn't it? Supposing if they are shady, which who knows about that as we don't know what goes on in their workplace. This whole event is questionable on both sides. But I just rather not trust the internet to big companies like that, but like you said, if the government wants it bad enough, we can't do a hoot about it.

Exactly. A lot of the pro-neutrality ads I've seen on the Internet lately either don't show the other side's argument, characterize the other side as villainous without any evidence, or both. In most cases it IS both. I'm perfectly cool with people having informed opinions, and I love to debate. However, posts like this (not your comment but the main post ) only serve to rally uneducated forces. There is an argument for both sides, and I hope that, in every instance possible, people understand both arguments in the debate before making a decision.

Too late for most of us it looks like.
I don't really see why they have to make it as propaganda as that's like not being informative so much as We are better than them just because! They should at least state other than the money part, and being monitored as why the FCC isn't good. Or I could just research too. lol
Like I think people are watched online to a degree not that it matters for me. I don't care what they see as I'm not doing anything worthy of being bugged for, at least not to my knowledge.
I like debating too. Although in debates there's the golden rule where you have to understand both sides of an argument before you get to the bottom of things and see the big picture. That's kinda hard on certain topics if one doesn't properly research and just say whatever. The approach the pro-net neutrality seems immature in the whole these guys are monsters thing. Its entertaining for art and ads but in reality as this is a real situation, I'm not certain if the FCC is all that they make it out to be. For all we know net neutrality may have darker things happening in the background just so we can do whatever we want. I'm probably just letting my imagination run with that but its not like I know anything about this topic.

My thoughts exactly. Obviously, none of us can say for certain what's going on behind the curtains, but it's important to look at both sides of any argument. Whether someone's side is right or wrong, they can learn what their opponents think and use that to their advantage, finding ways to counter their argument. Perhaps, through research, one might find that his original position was in fact flawed, and he may strengthen his position with newly-found facts, or change it if the information deems it necessary.
It's certainly been fun talking to you.

This battle for the net site and DA failed to mention what the FCC is actually doing though.
What the FCC is doing is making a repeal of Title II of the Communications Act of 1934 which was an act that was created for telephone services that in 2015 they tried to apply to ISPs and classify them as "common carriers".
It doesn't really work because that section has a lot of things that doesn't really apply to the internet. It's actually caused more problems than solved.
This and net neutrality are two different things. The FCC will still be able to create and enact net neutrality rules with or without this title II.

The BfTN site is funded by Silicon Valley billionaires because they want to keep their exemption from the NN rules following the 2015 decision. One day under a free market Amazon and Google will go the way of Myspace and Yahoo and better things will take their place. Without a free market that doesn't happen and innovations never see the light of day.

The answer is that Net Neutrality forces all online traffic to have the same priority.
The theory is that, without Net Neutrality, ISPs will charge extra fees for certain websites.
So, how about this: We de-regulate the business of providing internet and let ISPs do as they please. If ISPs go overboard and people don't like the internet they're getting, they can switch.
Do you know what happens next?
An ISP that uses your lovely "Net Neutrality" on its own, without being forced to by the government will rise up and succeed financially.
"But then it'll be one or two ISPs with all the money and power!"
Right now it's one central government with all the money and power. If there are ISPs with the power and they go overboard, they'll phase out as consumers use other ISPs. If the government alone has all the power, commoners such as ourselves have no means to stop it.
So, do you want the power to be in YOUR hands? Or do you want Net Neutrality? You can't have them both.

I like your openmindedness to this, The FCC is getting rid of lobbyist created rules enacted in 2015 that have increased the size of government yet allowed loopholes to benefit billionaires Silicon Valley (especially in Amazon and Google) and have caused a stifling oligopoly in cable companies. A free market as you said would prevent throttling.

I'll go with keeping liberty and freedom for the people, and not entrusting the government to be benevolent.

I thought I did an accurate job, because you're clamoring for the FCC to keep and enforce the rules the FCC put in place while at the same time demonizing them. "Keep Net Neutrality (FCC Enforced), the FCC is evil". Disagreement is one thing, I am all for debating the merits of each argument, but what your doing, demonization, prevents even basic discussion, instead labeling the opposition as not only wrong, but evil. I disagreed with just about everything Obama did while in office, I think he was a terrible President, I never once labeled him evil, or a demon, or Hitler, I wish you could be reasonable enough to do the same.
The head of the FCC is a Trump appointee, but the rest of the bureaucracy that runs the FCC and is writing this proposal has been there since before Trump and some even before Obama. Do you even know what the NPRM proposal is and what it's trying to accomplish?
"We emphasize that we oppose blocking lawful material. The Commission has repeatedly found the need for a no-blocking rule on principle, asserting that “the freedom to send and receive lawful content and to use and provide applications and services without fear of blocking is essential to the Internet’s openness.”" - FCC in the NPRM.
