DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings . To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership . (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants.) Once changed, your previous username will redirect to your new profile. You can only change your username once per six months and you are not able to change back to the original username.
What Happens When You Change Usernames
Once you change your username, you will be logged out and asked to login again using your new username and existing password.
Everything will be transferred
Your deviations (artwork), favourites, watchers, messages, stats, settings, etc., will all be transferred to the new username. The only thing that doesn’t transfer are the places where people mentioned your old username in comments, journals, artwork descriptions, etc. However, those links will redirect to your new username.
Your watchers will be notified
Your watchers will get a notification in their Message Center informing them that you have changed your username. Also, "(formerly [username])" will display on your new username’s Profile Page and next to your username for one month. This notice will always display (even after the one month) if someone visits your old profile and is redirected to the new one.

- Username changes are available to anyone with an active Premium Membership -- whether you bought it yourself or it was gifted to you.
- You cannot change your username to one that is taken even if you are the owner of both. You cannot claim a deactivated account.
- You can simply change the capitalization of your username.
- No one will be able to claim your old username.
- Group username changes are not supported at this time.

May I ask why you need a CORE membership just to change something? I need to change my name to my YouTube but this is restricting and annoying, is there any actual reason behind it? did people change their names too much? I need an explanation please.

Yeah, really. I have the same exact concern. Are you open to start a petition for this? I don't want to sign up for Core membership that I don't want, just so I can change my username. It's even more ridiculous that we have to actually pay to get Core, even though we'd only get rid of it afterward because we only want our names changed.
I need a fresh start, but I don't want to go through the trouble of opening a new account, downloading everything, which would take forever (because I'm doing this now transferring everything to FB), and losing all that I already worked for, since there are too many people to let know where their Faves have gone.

A petition huh? sure I'm up for it. and I know what you mean, I don't have that many followers or fans on any of my accounts but it would be kinda sad for me to just try and make another account altogether. I know other people are saying "That it transfers data to this 'new' account" but I'm not sure the programmers should have made it that difficult for themselves.
Maybe if they got some advice from other big brand websites for sharing such as YouTube (Yea I know that is kinda impossible) and maybe even Pinterest or whatever and just see what they use to make it such a simple process to change a name. I know that that's probably gonna be easy or they won't get much help but they could try. I'm not in a rush to change my name but I do want to change it sooner rather than later.

I love having a username probably noone else would invent.

As a seasoned programmer, I strongly disagree. Changing a username is not a complex process.
If your site is designed to make it complicated enough to require 15 dollars worth of labor just to change a string variable in a database, then you are the worlds worst programmer and you should feel bad.
Also love the recent 50% off core membership offer. Maybe they should put that towards the monthly fee so that maybe I would feel even remotely inclined to screw myself out of $7.50 just to change a string. What a steal!
