DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings . To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership . (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants.) Once changed, your previous username will redirect to your new profile. You can only change your username once per six months and you are not able to change back to the original username.
What Happens When You Change Usernames
Once you change your username, you will be logged out and asked to login again using your new username and existing password.
Everything will be transferred
Your deviations (artwork), favourites, watchers, messages, stats, settings, etc., will all be transferred to the new username. The only thing that doesn’t transfer are the places where people mentioned your old username in comments, journals, artwork descriptions, etc. However, those links will redirect to your new username.
Your watchers will be notified
Your watchers will get a notification in their Message Center informing them that you have changed your username. Also, "(formerly [username])" will display on your new username’s Profile Page and next to your username for one month. This notice will always display (even after the one month) if someone visits your old profile and is redirected to the new one.

- Username changes are available to anyone with an active Premium Membership -- whether you bought it yourself or it was gifted to you.
- You cannot change your username to one that is taken even if you are the owner of both. You cannot claim a deactivated account.
- You can simply change the capitalization of your username.
- No one will be able to claim your old username.
- Group username changes are not supported at this time.

So does this mean you can't take a username of an inactive account that been dead for 8 years and all they ever have done with it is make the account and leave it to rot? I am more willing to pay for core membership for a username change but deviantart's username policy is not right and unfair to new users and people who want to change their username. Why? Well, once a username is taken, its gone, its done. There should be a better policy because having a username to match your name and without numbers is important because it will make it easier for people to search you and easier to remember without extra numbers. The username I want is "JKruger". Unfortunately, when I went to jkruger.deviantart.com, it was already taken but as "Jkruger". I'm wondering if I could change my username to "JKruger" but the subdomain automatically changes every letter lowercase to jkruger.deviantart.com so I'm wondering if it will work or not. Why are people so salty about having to get core to change your username
-it's not as though you're paying to JUST change your name, you're paying to get all the features of core.
-Yes, you can delete your account, go into settings>Deactivation. Simple.
-Why would you change it back? If you've changed your name, then most likely it was because you didn't like the first one.
-Everyone just needs to calm down, if you're not prepared to support this website by paying for core, then you can't change your name. Free username changes > No one pays for core so they can change their name > DA doesn't make as much money > DA can't sustain itself > DA closes down
TL;DR
If you can't be bothered to pay, don't complain, its not like you have to pay just to change your name.

Okay, just because people don't want to pay DA to make a user change, doesn't mean we're salty.
- ever thought that we maybe don't WANT the core feautres? I really don't want the core features, I only want my DA name to match the names I have on other websites.

- There are also very indecisive people. You can't expect eveyrone to always make choices they're happy with.
- You have no idea how much money they make with the ads. Like, DA makes enough off of ads on their own. they wouldn't need the core memberships at all to sustain themselves.
In the end, to actually CHANGE the name, you have to pay. If you want another name, there's another way to get it, yes, but changing the name means to keep everything the same except the name. Deleting the account isn't changing the name.

WTF DeviantART already makes enough money through the Core Memberships that people pay for, to be able to get their locked features unlocked like the locked widgets on their Profile Page!
