I'm sure even the most hardcore Fiyerba shippers must realize that them hooking up in the book is a bit... sudden and random.

I agree! The only reason I actually realized they'd hook up was the picture that comes right before The City of Emeralds, when Elphaba's in bed and being approached by a hot guy clad in diamond war markings. That made me want to read it so much more though
I love musical Fiyero!! Although I really wish they had given him some sort of blue diamond markings at least on his faec, just to stay true to the book, ya know??
