... There is someone familiar.
Aside from learning about each other, Bluey and Hetro showed each other their friends.
Hetro was proud and excited to introduce his husband to the folk that met them the day they got married. Huebey was confused, but he went along with the revelation, being manageable company for once since Hetro was so ecstatic about this.
The few Bluey had- the ones he was willing to show this discovery of himself- all took Hetro warmly, as he was naturally so charismatic. The twins were the most excited, gawking at how Hunter looked so pretty, but Bluey was better anyways, which made him look away bashfully.
Alongside learning their friends and social groups, the two got to know each other even better...
Though something was starting to feel off.
"We're pretty different, huh," Commented Bluey. He cast a somber smile at Hetro, who was quietly nodding.
"Yeah. Didn't think it'd be that way. But I guess it makes sense." Hetro flicked an ear in thought. "I'm really not the guy I was when I first came here. Like, literally- I looked so different. I've changed in a lot of ways."
"Hmm. That's true." Bluey was quiet before he spoke up again. It was easier to let the smallest of thoughts become words around Hetro. "You remind me of when I was really young. How I... used to be like what you are, sort of. And how I could've been that in some way, in another time."
Hetro didn't say anything, only giving Bluey a deep look.
Finally, he sighed, brushing his bangs back. "Heh... I was gonna say you're like my brother, you know. 'Cause you're both so quiet. But smart..."
"Me? Smart? In what?" Bluey smirked.
"In, like- plants n' nature n' shit? You know everything about the wildlife here and you've only been around for a few months. I kept eating poisonous plants in the guild, dude!"
"I'm not too surprised to hear that honestly. It sounds like an impulse I would've fallen into, too."
"... You really think I was like you?"
"I mean it makes sense to me. If what you remember is true, that you grew up in a small town with no problems, then it's what happened to us as adults that changed us so differently. Because... yeah. My life really changed when I grew up." Wistfully, he looked away.
Hetro frowned to himself and shrugged. "Ah, I dunno. It could be a lot of other things than just childhood."
"I guess."
"... What's weird to me is how you grew up alone. I couldn't imagine anything without my brother."
"I thought you couldn't remember much of him."
"Sometimes when I talk about him it comes back. So those pieces are nice to think about." His long tail tapped against the ground in thought. "But I don't really, uh..." He sighed. "I haven't met anyone that is really like him all the way, yeah... it makes me miss him even more."
There wasn't much to say about a lost loved one. Bluey simply nodded quietly and patted Hetro's arm, who blinked gratefully at him.
"Haha, I dunno, I find it weird making comparisons like that, because I don't even really know what I'm talking about half the time." Hetro chuckled nervously and shrugged again. "There's plenty of introverted folks who remind me of my bro."
"But hey, that's not bad, you know. Finding the things that remind you of someone in somebody else. Just don't let that define them."
"What, like how I'm you but younger?"
Bluey grimaced and frowned. "No, no. Sorry. I hope I didn't make you feel-"
"No, you're good! But it's made me think of a few things about myself..."
Hetro trailed off, but didn't continue, and Bluey waited a bit, curious about what he meant. However, it was clear he didn't intend on continuing his thought, looking away again as they sat quietly for a while after that.
Bluey did like seeing his younger self in Hetro, he admitted to himself. He was moreso happy that there was somehow an existence of him that, even if things were not perfect now, he had a semblance of good things to recall of himself, and that he grew up to be a thoughtful and kind person. Something he struggled so hard to even try to be.
He liked seeing how Hetro was him but better. That still was true in his mind.
Even if he didn't want to be associated as him, Bluey deep down knew that was what the dynamic was, inevitable and forever bound to the two.
But no one else had to know it.
