The thing that I really like about the possibility of Silver Spoon redemption is the fact that the fanbase didn't really treat her sympathetically until she demonstrated redeeming qualities on her own. As such, it clearly wasn't manipulated by the fanbase, so I find it much more believable that Silver could be a decent pony if Diamond Tiara wasn't around to be a bad influence on her.

As our mutual Deviant friend Alex Warlorn correctly pointed out - the writers needed characters for the sole purpose of acting as obstacles for the Cutie Mark Crusaders to overcome, and in order for that to occur, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon must remain flat, unlikable bullies with no room or hope of ever getting character development.Β

Which has become completely jarring.
They were MEANT to function as one-shot villains. But unlike Trixie, they were kept to formula. And were flanderized to the point of absurdity.
I'm sick of it. Give them some actual personalities other than hate sinks dammit.

Some people LIKE to have one-dimensional villains on TV - they WANT to have some one who represents people they don't like in real life whom they could project their hatred and frustration on, and feel cathartic joy when said villains gets demolished on TV, all without feeling guilt or remorse since they have no personality beyond being evil.
In real life, some 'evil' people are beyond justice due to their power, status or simply luck, who can get away with punishment in their time on earth, and that frustrates us to no end. Why did you suppose we invented the concept of hell, where evil sinners gets tortured forever and ever and ever?Β So we comfort ourselves with the idea that they willΒ still get their just deserts, even after the end. Fictional villains who gets defeated and punished is roughly the same thing; it's revenge by proxy.
Thus, the existence of one-dimensional villains in fiction is merely a reflection of one fundamental truth about Humanity: We are an inherently vindictive, vengeful species. And we have it, because being vengeful is one of the traits that made us so successful as intelligent apex predators. It motivates us to destroy anyone who hurts us and threatens us, and it drove us to mercilessly crush any competition in our way, until we are at the top of the food chain.
If any other species ever become sentient or intelligent, no doubt they would become as vengeful as we are; nobody stays on top by being passive.
It's also because it involves a drug addiction of dopamine, the pleasure hormone, which is released by our brains when we get angry and hateful, triggering the 'FIGHT' of our fight-or-flight response. It prepares us for combat, dulling pain - and our conscience - in a high of vengeful ecstasy.
Which is why some times, some people WANT to be wronged by other people.
This is why one can never get rid of one-dimensional, card-carrying villains in fiction - as long as humanity exists, they would always WANT someone to punish without guilt. Defeating villains are escapist fantasies that allows people to let go of their pent up frustration of a cruel and unfair world. They want someone to compare against and make them feel righteous and justified. And the more absurdly evil fictional villains are, the better.

And such villains WORK in action movies! You're there for the explosions and the hero punching people!Β
It works in super hero movies, (mostly) because you're there for a clear case of good vs evil.
And it works in a platformer game since you're there to jump on the heads of things.Β
But in MLP FiM where character develop is such a big theme of the story, having a villain with the design and style of a one-shot baddie make repeat appearances without giving them depth DOESN'T work.Β

Which, ultimately, is what makes them and violent video-games so utterly immoral - it makes us think there's nothing wrong in dehumanizing people we don't like to one-dimensional caricatures of villainy, and then encourages us to punch or shoot them in the face.
This kind of attitude resulted in the Holocaust.
But we watch or play them anyways because...

See, EXACTLY! It's a drug addiction - addiction of dopamine and adrenaline. We're addicted to it all; toΒ power-fantasiesΒ violence, vindication and vengeance. We imagine and project ourselves to the action heroes on screen, and for the duration of the film or game believe that we are on the (clearly defined) side of the light, good and righteous, have the power to defeat pitch-black evil, and set right all that is wrong in the world.
But the film will end, and once we walk out of the cinema and back into reality, we realize that we actually can't do any of that; we individually are mostly impotent and powerless to make any real difference in the face of a cruel, uncaring and morally complex world. And we also remember that trying to be action heroes often just makes problems we want to solve even worse.
For action genre in fiction, I recommend playing (Or at least watch a Youtube walkthrough of)Β the FPS game"Spec Ops: The Line" for an utterly brutal deconstruction of its conventions. It's not the same as action movies, but the deconstruction still applies. A line from the game:
"The truth... is that you're here because you wanted to feel like something you're not: A hero."

Yes, I've seen him say on several occasions. Though, since season three I've held onto some hope that we would get a "Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon get redeemed" episode in season fourΒ but that doesn't likely anymore. Not unless the writers are planning some big twist.
