Description
Roken is dodelijk (Smoking is deadly in Dutch)Just how much is it a killer? how about exhaust fumes in big cities?
I am not a smoker. Surely, smoking wouldn't have a positive effect on your health.
But how much is it worse than a non smoker walking around in the polluted air of a big city

Hmm, ik zal in het Engels reageren (I'll respond in English)
pfff, where to begin ...
smokers CAN get lung cancer and non smokers CAN get lung cancer
Cancer runs in our family, my mum had cancer (luckily they were in time to cut it out of her, my dad has lung cancer now, but according to the specialists, he sooner will die of his old age (he'll be 86 this year) then from the lung cancer
It's true what you say about the pollution in the air around the world from the factories (most of it is from factories) and cars, I think we should worry more about that, I mean ... people will always smoke, no matter what, even though they know the risks of smoking ... if you look at all the health risk people can come upon, nothing is healthy, not even our water that we drink, even though they claim the water we buy is healthy for us ... as far as I saw on documentaries on tv our water is in one pace healthier then in another place or country in the world, even food, healthy foods like fruits and so on will damage our teeth, so we have to buy a different toothpaste (as they claim on tv, ads and so on) or go to the dentists more often ... Look at so called heath drinks/shots like vitamin waters or a dairy filled with the so called good bacteria ... in all our foods and drinks are bacteria, in meat, fruit, vegetables and so on and some are even put in there deliberately, good bacteria and bad bacteria, they also ad specific ingredients in them so you can get addicted to them, like sugars and fats and so on, our meat, filled with water, so it looks like you have a lot of meat, our lettuce, filled with water so it looks bigger and so on .. it all comes to get more and more money from the customers, no matter what ... saying things are healthy or unhealthy so they can ask more money for it or put more tax on it, so the treasure chest of the governments can get more stuffed with that money ... everything has to do with money, always have and always will
So what is healthy and what is not?Β I don't know, allΒ know is that I only live once and in that life I want to enjoy it, if I want to smoke a cigarette I will, if I want to drink a beer every once in a while or wine or whatever, I will, if I want to eat a juicy steak of some french fries I will. I don't know if it's true what they all say, all I know that if they announce on tv that smoking is bad for you or eating sugar is bad for you or whatever, after that, the prices of those things will go up, even if they say it's biological meat or eggs or fruits and vegetables the prices go up sky high and really, people with low income or even high income really think it's ridiculous how high those prices are, the cost of living should be cheap and not that high just because it's said they are so called biological.
So again ... what's healthy? I have no idea ... I think our governments should think a little more human and not just in money signs ... if they keep on going with those stupidly high prices of food soon there'll be no one left to buy food and then they can go to work on there bicycles to reign over non existing people and countries, all thanks to them. Look at our stupid EURO's, as soon as the Euro came, everyone got poorer, our income was cut in half and all the prices got dubbled by paying what you pais earlier in guilder you have to pay in euro's, so please bring back our own guilder ... zo denk ik erover en kan nog wel uren doorgaan, maar er zijn echt enorm veel mensen die er zo over denken.Β

It sure is a killer!!
Both my parents died of it: mother because of her lungs, father because of a brain attack. Cause by smoking. And sitting in other peoples smoke isn't good either, I've got COPD because of that!
Have a look in nursing homes to assure!
Of course polution is very bad too and so many other things, but when you can avoid it, it's better for you.

I am very sorry to hear that.
But if you have to avoid everything that could potentially kill you, you'd be better off isolating yourself from the world.

You cannot avoid everything! You've got to make your own choices!

You bring up a really good point. Great job with the simple way of getting it across to people. I feel that people just blame everything on smokers and smoking and dont look at the bigger picture as you said, pollution in big cities and everything else that goes into the air day to day.

I feel the same way, the focus is too much on the smokers and they have a very tiny contribution to what kills people on this earth.
They forget car accidents, obesity, pollution and lots of other things.

Well, Life is about choices. Yeah, statistically each cig takes a few minutes off your life, but if you deny yourself things that give you pleasure is that living? Gotta have what makes us happy

You raise an interesting question, but I prefer the honesty of these European labels that shout in your face. In America we have warning labels, but they're in small print, use evasive wording, and deny the truth that smoking kills. They just say they MIGHT cause health problems. Psh. It disgusts me.
I like this is black and white: it emphasizes the warning label and plays off of the word "black" that's printed on it. In my mind I can almost see white smoke curling around it...

you are right about the honesty, but why focus on smokers. how about places like mcdonalds and burgerking. fat food issnt the real lifegiver as well... i think there is too much focus on the smokers.

"Why focus on smokers?" Hmm...you have a point; perhaps the warning labels on the cigarette packets are directed towards the wrong people. If there should be a focus, the focus should be more on the machinations of Big Tobacco. The industry and company's manipulations are something to be disdained much more than the choice of the individual smoker.
As for fast food, I don't think that there is too much focus on smokers, but that there isn't enough focus on the evils of fast food, except for one example in particular, the excellent book Fast Food Nation that denounces places such as McDonald's and Burger King. I was raised to generally avoid those places to begin with, but after reading the book, I downright refuse to go in those establishments anymore.
