Here's my revised Monster for the Sketch Tavern's weekly sketch [link]I only spent about a half hour coloring the previous one I posted, and after looking at it, I thought it deserved a little more TLC. So here it is, watch out for him this Hallowe'en!
Sketch Topic: This weeks topic is to create your own movie monster. But don't stop there, add in a little background for your spectre or ghoul. Pop on by and post some pics, they can be rough all the way up to a nice finished piece. Anything goes!
Movie Monster: Samhain
Samhain is the name of the summer's end celebration, which is based on the doctrine that the souls of the faithful which at death have not been cleansed from venial sins. The embodyment of Samhain only appears every 100 years. He arrives on All Hallows Eve to collect the souls that he thinks have become morally unacceptable. Even the simplest of sins will feel the sharp rusted steel of his scythe pierce their skin.

I love how this reminds me a lot of the Ghostbusters cartoon series villain of the same name and similar design, but is far creepier! Its like a wonderful nostalgia.

Cool design Dan, an extra kudos for the use of the Irish name
One thing I found with the image though is that the costume design has a real old Eastern America kind of look to it (reminds me a lot of Sleepy Hollow in fact). This is cool and all but I really would have loved to see a design that went with the name. Seeing as the name is Irish, I would have loved to see you putting in more of an old Irish feel to the clothing (see [link] [link] [link] to see what I mean). Don't get me wrong, this looks great as is but I think it really would have given your character that extra edge if you had have gone with a clothing style that was different to what everyone else draws.
Still, this is great stuff and really has me inspired to do my best for this contest.

Thanks man! I totally agree with you on the costumes and I appreciate the links. For some reason, when I first drew him I had Sleepy Hollow on the brain, more colonial I guess. I will try some new duds for the next piece though!

YOU ARE AMAZING. Probably the coolest thing I've seen all day. You see something evil like a serial killer and think it's evil looking, but then this comes along and you say to yourself "man that is some evil we are dealing with here!". Wow!

YES. I love pumpkin headed monsters, also All Hallows Eve and Samhain interest me, so it's all just a good match up of things I like about the end of October, here.
The deranged faces in the background lend a spooky and otherwordly fright to the main man himself. Awesome.

Thanks for the C&C! No worries about the title. This was done up for the Sketch Tavern's weekly sketch. The topic was to create a movie monster, so I took the idea and twisted it around to fit into that genre. I'm very familar with the festival of Samhain, and I know it's a far stretch from this premise. It's all for fun though

Of course... the Ghostbusters fan in me applauds the idea as being an extremely cool alternate design to the aforementioned holiday spirit.
But putting GB aside, Samhain is a really cool looking momster, the scythe (Being utterly appropriate for the harvest season) which adds a perfect hint of danger, and the period dress which not only hints at age (Being older then people might expect)... and maybe references the Headless Horseman. Great job made.
