Description
Attempting to color the guy on the far right of this image would have made more sense in terms of practice as that guy was the best rendered from a pure "clean line" standpoint, but I wanted to color this gal in for reasons that are mysterious and likely never ever to be solved by anyone ever.Colored using photoshop and the magic of the "multiply" layer option. I did not rely purely on the pencil-added shadows and added some highlights and shadows through color. Not sure if that was the best approach, but this is PRACTICE. I TRY and I LEARN. BAH!

Again I am reminded why no matter how much I practice, I will forever and always be a writer and not an artist.
Still looks like Goth Rhoda.

Goth Rhoda? That could be a background someday.

Goth Sarah was an alternate dimension magic user with a different personality. Goth RHODA would just be Rhoda in a goth getup looking cheerful and cute all the same.

When I learnt of the wonderful multiply mode, I almost wept in joy.
Then I learnt of what I like to call the "inverted Colour" layer scheme.
Basically, put pure lineart at the top of the stack, then the colours between the lines at the top and the white background on the bottom.
This also prevents the slight distortion to the colour that multiply causes, as well as reducing problems caused by overlapping colour layers.
Example:
Put her hair and dress on a layer, her skin on another. The blue you can just scribble in with a large brush, only having to make sure that it doesn't go outside her entire body. Then colour in the skin layer. Then put the layers in the following order:
Lines
Skin
Cloth/Hair
White Back
Of course, this method can become...complicated when you have a lot of crossthatching/shading in pencil scanned to the computer, as it becomes complicated to peel the lines from the background.
I prefer to just re-line the entire picture, but this takes time which, in a comic, is vital. This is a moot point if you draw on the computer from scratch, or if you just do single/major pieces (like me, and many others).
Relining and using the undercolours results in cleaner lines though, as well as a nigher focus on the colour, which also requires excceptional shading/highlighting skills to make look good, as the colours stand out, on average, much more than the lines themselves.
Either way, it still looks good, and I love EGS

Oh, and as for shadows, I prefer a low exposude burn, with a generally large brush, though it only really works with a pressure-sensetive tablet...
I find it too complicated getting the right shade of colour for shadows, plus it gets too annoying running over slightly smaller areas over and over again with a slightly differrent colour tone.

pay attention so you don't have to take time out of EGS to catch up!!

Oh, I actually pay more attention at times if I doodle during class. I risk glazing over and day dreaming otherwise. It's essentially the lesser of two evils by keeping my mind focused on just one distraction instead of going off on a tangent.
Sounds odd, I know, but I also get more work done at home if I control my distractions, as there's guaranteed to be some. If I control the distraction, by say putting on Futurama commentary, then there's at least a singular distraction that can just play in the background while I do stuff instead of my mind wandering all over the place and getting severely off task.
...I might have ADD. I dunno. I just know if I do, then they'd want to fix it with meds, and I don't want to take them, so I'll just make do with what may or may not be a psychological disorder. Same as my may or may not be OCD!

Do you have a laptop? If so, I find the best way to avoid temptation when doing non-computer work is to turn it off, put it in its case, and put it somewhere where getting it would be effort. Therefore, the time and effort of getting it and turning it on etc seem less worth it, so it's not going to distract me.

Problem is, 95% of all work I do is on the computer. WHICH is why it would be nice to do more in simply pencil.

Actually, for me, that would be a reason NOT to color. I could make ANYTHING suck with the aid of coloring utensils. x3
