Description
In first two days after installing Windows 7 I found and replaced these network tray icons. The reason was simple: I was using local area network without internet connection and connected to the internet manually via VPN. So every time I started my PC or disconnected from the internet I saw that icon with an exclamation mark, which made me think something was wrong with my LAN-connection and reminded about unhappy days when I was unable to use my LAN because of some failures (and yeah, Windows XP showed an exclamation mark).
So I decided to change the icons.
There are 2 pnidui.dll files for Windows 7 (build 7600) x86 & x64.
Many thanks to ox30, who made a ready-to-apply dll files for x64!. Please, feel free to leave "thanks" on his profile. [link]
To apply this patch, go to %windir%\System32\ (it's for x86, so find equal system folder for x64) and take ownership of the original pnidui.dll. Rename it to pnidui.bak, for example, but do not delete. Then copy and paste the pnidui.dll file from a folder with a variant that you like most into your system32 (or equal for 64, again ^^) folder. Restarting Explorer may be enough to see changes. Otherwise restart your computer.
For newer versions of W7 (SP1, etc..):
You can also apply the patch manually using Restorator 2007 utility and *.ico files from downloaded folders. Their names refer to icon resource name, so you won't have troubles in searching for proper resources to change.
This article may be helpful for you. [link]
As you see, same actions you need to do with pnidui.dll.
This little fix probably won't be popular, but it surely can be helpful for people like me
You comments and suggestions are always welcome.
p.s. By the way, there's a piece of taskbar from my W7 style "Aero DS" that you see on preview

TrayIcon [2009-12-22 04:00:36 +0000 UTC]
Good One! I've been looking for something like this. But what I'm still missing, is a third variant of this icon with a red X or similar symbol, saying "there's no connection at all". This would give the tray icon the same gool old functionality which the XP-LAN-tray-icon once had.
This is my suggestion!
Best regards,
TrayIcon

Alright, already saw, that the icon is replaced by another one when I shut down the connection. But there are two more things, which I am still missing.
1. I'd like the icon to show me "activity/no activity", like the Win98, Win2000 and XP LAN TrayIcons did, highlighting when there was activity. Very useful, because I like to know, what's going on.
2. I'd like to be able to rightclick the icon and then be offered "connect" and "disconnect". Very useful, too.
What do you think about my suggestions?

well, here is a little problem. I can not add new features to the original dll, only change resources.. icons.
so you need some programs to be found.
and concerning "a third variant of this icon with a red X or similar symbol, saying "there's no connection at all" is already done by default, so no need to make it.

I think you should have a close look at your visual style
%windir%\resources\themes\ .. and then the style you are using. Aero by default.

no windows 7 for me for the next 3-4 years.. until it becomes worthy of using ^_^ .. i sure hope linux improves by that time, so i dont have to mess windows 7. xp is my only savior right now

7 is so worth it, I have never had a blue screen or a fatal system error of any kind on it... and I have been using it since December. I put this thing through some crap too. I used to get them on my XP install until some drivers updated... and I installed XP after 7! Use Windows 7 now. It is safe, stable, fast, and doesn't need a service pack to fix all the bugs... because they just don't exist!
Not to mention, it's soooooo much easier to customize :-D

i cant fully agree with you - the explorer buttons are stuck - just backward and forward - (<)(>)
all can be done is to replace the texture for skins... lots of things on vista and 7 are "glued"
i agree with you that win7 has potential, i, on my laptop have installed several linux distros, xp, vista and 7 and windows 7 is not bad, i hate the performance though - i have 3gb ram and 2.16 dual core on my laptop and yet, my laptop becomes literally on fire after few hours, i really like it, but not now - in few years, when pcs get even more inhumane - some quad core 3ghz, 5-6gb ram, 1gb video, then i will love windows 7 ...

Every laptop gets hot after a few hours.... how hot they get depends on the laptop's cooling system, that's not the best way to judge an OS. The performance of 7 is way better than Vista was on my machine. Its faster and lighter any day.

i know its faster than vista, and seems a bit more stable, and i respect it, but somehow it frustrates me using it for a while
but i think my laptop stays cooler with xp while playing insane games, as for just watching animes or browsing with 7 i get a firplace ^_^
but that probably just me .. i stay for a month with each so... it means im still using it, but i know on a more powerful computer i will be as fasta as a bullet

ah I see
but it is because you've got addicted to default icons
so as I wrote it is a fix for those who don't ^^
