Okay, everyone. Hear me out, because this is going to be quite a controversial opinion. Here goes...
THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD IS A BAD FILM, BECAUSE IT CAUSED THE DOWNFALL OF THE LITTLE BLUE ENGINE AS WE KNOW HIM.
Not only that, it also began the downfall of the Thomas & Friends brand as we know it. Why, you ask? Well, let me explain.
First off, Britt Allcroft had a fascination with Shining Time Station (you know, the show that helped introduce Thomas to America), but what she failed to realise was that most children didn't really care about the 'Shining Time' parts, like, at all, so they only latched onto the 'Thomas' segments. Also, many children only bought the Shining Time toys with the Thomas characters, and didn't care for the other Shining Time toys.
Next, the connection between Thomas and Shining Time just DOESN'T WORK. Having Sodor being a Narnia-like place where it can only be accessed by magic doesn't make sense. Again, Children only cared about Thomas, so there was no point in crossing it over.
Also, there's the advertising. Audiences saw Thomas on the posters and the trailers and went into the movie expecting to see him and his engine friends on the big screen. What they got instead was a tale about a little man being stranded on an island without his magical dust that lets him go from place to place, a poor man who tries to restore his own steam engine, but without success until his granddaughter comes to visit him, and a little bit of the Island of Sodor and the talking engines thrown in as filler. Children wanted to see Thomas, and they are NOT going to care about the humans from Shining Time, or better yet a confusing storyline.
Finally, the deleted scenes featuring P.T. Boomer, the supposed "deleted" villain from the movie. Well, my friend RailfanBronyMedia has some insight into why he's a bad villain:

So, my friends, whether you want to admit it or not, it was not the test audience's fault that TATMRR flopped, it was Britt Allcroft and her overblown ego that killed the concept right from the start. She was obsessed so much with Shining Time Station that she refused to admit that children preferred the Thomas stories to it, and her "showcase" of it during Thomas & Friends' fifth series didn't help matters either, thanks to her pandering to older children by upping up the seriousness. The film itself should stay as a cautionary tale to people who have ideas with bold opportunities for. I forever stand by my statements that I would rather take Calling All Engines!, The Great Discovery, and Big World! Big Adventures over Thomas and the Magic Railroad any day of the week.
