Description
Ink and colored pencil on dyed paper.
This is a flight of fancy that has been sitting in the back of my mind for some years now. I finally decided to do it. What you see here is drawn from Giovanni Schiaparelli's observations.
I chose to use pale translucent color here because the paper is so beautifully stained, I wanted it to show through, and also did not want the color to overpower the drawing.
For this map I used the actual paper I used to make [link] Weathered Paper 16 and not the stock image.
You can view this map without the color here: [link]

well the details are a little fuzzy from lack of sleep at the time, but I believe it was something along the lines of
Me: "Hey, I bet I could stain that paper to make it look older with just what we have here at work."
Him: "with just stuff found here at work? you're crazy."
Me: "Probably, here's a 20 on it."
Him: "Easy money, you're on!"
Him To: "Hey can I get down on this action? I took an art class once. I bet if we all try mine will look the best (holds up his 20)".
Me: "you got a bet."
Him: "wait now, this isn't fair I don't know how to draw."
Me: "don't need to stain paper."
Him To: "you ever done this before?"
Me and Him: "Nope."
Him To: "easy money."
we all took the night to stain paper from the copy machine. I used green tea with a touch of coffee to darken it. Him used the butt can in the outdoor break area and Him To smeared lotion over the paper and wadded it up and stuffed it in a cup of coffee.
Him's paper caught fire. Him To's paper looked pretty cool but because of the lotion it was worthless to use. Mine had a pretty cool look to it and was great for use in art so that was 60 to me. I blew it on booze, which is another interesting story...

This looks really great. I remember watching you do this kind of stuff way back when. Looking really good. I still love the weathered paper look. I've done that with one of the pieces I did in my class recently. It turned out really good. It was too awkward to take a photo of and post here however.

Thanks! Yeah... the last one you saw me do was the last map I did. I've always wanted to draw this. I made the border with a ruler, then for some reason decided to eyeball everything else. I got a little lazy in a few spots but over all I'm happy with it.
Have you thought of the idea of photographing sections of it and putting them all together into one image? It's a touch of work but can be well worth it. It's what I had to do with this one.

I've always been fascinated with the idea of Martian canals, I just finally decided to do it. Yeah, kind of comes from the kid in me...

Nice! I like how just adding light coloring makes it more visually appealing compared to just the inked version.

Thank you. The color certainly does make it pop. I was hoping for just a shade lighter on some colors and a shade darker on others, but I think it turned out perfect in the end.

I love this kind of art. Very detailed with rust-like textures.

Thank you. I used an oxidizing dye on the paper, in effect, truly rusting the paper.
