Description
4/20/13 was MOTHER 3's seventh birthday! I have some horrible obsession with the cancelled Earthbound 64 and that minecart scene. And the fannypacks. When you have twin fannypacks there is no way you can faildammit Nintendo

Lucas: Whoa Claus we're not gonna make that!
The mine cart goes flying across the chasm successfully
Claus: Made it.

If only this scene was in the GBA version,oh well.
By the way, which version would you prefer, would you prefer if Mother 3 was on the N64 or do you think it's better to just have the GBA version?

You and me both.
Benimaru Itoh's character designs had a certain kind of "bounce" to them I enjoyed. I disagree with Itoi's excuse of polygon graphics appearing too flashy, if anything the N64 game -- despite people's objections still had its own appeal and charm. They could still make landscapes as outlandish and detailed as they needed, but N64's hardware was very -- VERY bottlenecked.
It's more that they wanted design consistency with the previous games given the clay models -- which is understandable, but some designs in the final incarnation felt like sprite rips from previous games.
A lot of their work could have been salvaged easily on the GameCube with some model and background updates. It would have been the better choice for a number of reasons. Though the idea of trying to make the game a sandbox was a little TOO ambitious even for a first 3D attempt on their end. I do kind of wished the game spanned 10 years instead of 3, just so we'd have some more play time with Flint and seeing some father-son team up it would have given a better impression of their relationship than the game we got at least.
I will admit that some character designs did turn out better on the GBA (like Drago, Bronson and Duster) however. I don't hate the GBA game but the Nowhere Islands don't feel as vast in scale as any artwork of the map may suggest.

I agree. I adore the Mother 3 that we got with its beautiful sprite work and I've probably played through it fifty times--but it's too easy to wonder "what if?" haha Knowing that it was supposed to be much, much longer with a broader map makes me want to explore the world so badly. The story is interesting and I would've loved to see it expanded upon. More of Claus, more of Flint, more of the characters' relationships in general.

A part of me still wishes they had kept the fanny packs.

Me too. That's all Mother 3 was missing! Well, that and the minecart.

What was Nintendo's obsession with minecarts back then?

They were pretty prevalent. I found this article and laughed: [link]
