I actually came across this piece because a few people were playing offended, saying this was anti-religion and stuff like that, which just made me want to look at it more.

This picture is absolutely breath-taking, I really enjoy it. I can't imagine how long this must have taken. Anyways, I just wanted to tell you I enjoyed it very much. The colours are beautiful. +Fav/Watch

Whether it's anti-Christian or not is irrelevant to its quality as a piece of art, although it will of course have some bearing on an individual's appreciation of it.

Simply being 'offended' by something is a fairly minor deal really. It's not physically hurt you, and it's not caused horrendous emotional trauma. People should not be so scared to think uncomfortable thoughts.

Short of actually hurting someone physically or mentally, or inciting others to do so, I say no holds barred. Definitely no holds barred in art.

Moreoever, it's got us all talking. How many pieces of art generate the same amount of conversation?

I rlly respect originality, but...not in thins like this. May be, it's becouse i didn't rlly understood what your picture mean, cuz it's rlly hard...to think of something, when looking to this picture. Imho, it feels kind of bad to my stomach, so it's not my type of art i think. Anyway, from artistic point of view, you did a good job, it's very detailed...so i think it taked you quite a time to make this one.

This person, from another land, who you've never spoken to or really interacted with, has made you feel sick to your stomach.

It's made you feel something, and something powerful. How many other pieces of art can you say that about?

First off, I can't imagine how long it must've taken to render something this detailed. The patterns are incredible and the usage of color superb. Secondly, I must be missing something. It seems that people are ASSUMING this to be an "anti-Christian" piece. I'm, unabashedly Christian and what I see here is a statement but w/o the enlightenment of us all by you, the artist.

I checked out some other works in your gallery and all the ones I looked at were the same way. No artist's comments. Hence, your art could mean ANYTHING. Perhaps this is your point? Clearly you're a deep thinker. At least it seems that way to me. There's a lot of emotion in your work. I tend to think that the hateful will see what they wish to see according to what's already inside them whether they be Christians who hate, people who hate Christians/Christianity, etc. To be honest and I hope you take this criticism in the most encouraging way, truly I do; what "offends" me here is that you would put such masterful effort into much of your work and then remain silent as to your thoughts on it. Why? Maybe I'm ranting here, sorry for that. I do insightful and sometimes weird works myself, but admittedly I'm merely a cartoonist. Most people simply don't respect cartooning as an art form. Of course I could care less what they think, lol.

In short, I think people would benefit from some comments as to your thoughts on your own work. No matter how brief. I don't see how this would hurt things. It might even increase appreciation of the work you clearly spend so much time on developing. I hope this encourages you in future endeavors w/o coming across as being too "preachy." No pun intended, lol. God bless.

Thank you. People really need to look inward. That's why I try not to explain anything about the work. if this picture of his touch - it's good, if not - not too scary. important to continue to work.
But very often I lose heart, and did not want to, everything seems meaningless.

0VRzealous In reply to dario111 [2010-02-19 21:50:17 +0000 UTC]

Never give up. There is definitely a lot of meaning in life. The great thing about God given artistic talents and desires is that we are free to create whatever "worlds" we choose to live in and therefore also free to give meaning to whatever we choose. That's the blessed liberation of the arts. It's beautiful and needs no justification. We create because we are and we are because we create.

I too lose heart sometimes. A LOT more than I'd like to admit. I hurt a lot. I hurt because I'm not the successful artist I wish I was. I hurt because that means I don't have enough money to do the things I want to. I hurt because w/o the money I need or want then I can't date or find love. Women here in America are quite attracted to men with money! At least that’s how I feel a lot, lol. I choose to date or "love," if you will outside of my so called race. I tend to be attracted more to "white" females. But as a black man growing up in the southern states of America I've been conditioned to think that this is somehow wrong. The religious sometimes say God separated the races; but He didn't. That crap isn't in the Bible, lol! I know that they're just insecure and racist. The bottom line is I've got about a million reasons to kill myself and honestly I've thought about it...a few times actually. But I obviously, haven't and I won't. That would be too easy. The cowards way out, to be honest. In the end, I realize that it is God that gave us life and me that gives my life meaning not others. So why let them win, especially if I know that they're so wrong?

Btw, ironically I have a copy of the original painting that you portray here in a much darker light, so to speak. Again, no pun intended, lol. I don't know if you know the history behind that painting. If so forgive this indulgence’s redundancy. The original is Polish in origin. It's at the Our Lady of Czestochowa. Supposedly miracles β€œrevolve” around this painting since an attack on the monastery in the 15th century; I believe by the French? Supposedly the French tried to destroy the painting but could not. The two slashes on the side of Mary’s face are supposed to be evidence of bayonet attacks, but to no avail. There are different versions of this story that I’ve come across over the years. All different, all nonetheless attributed to the miraculous. One website I found says that traditionally Saint Luke the Evangelist is attributed with being the painter of the original but I don’t think anyone knows for sure who painted it to be honest.

The point I’m seeking to make, in my own long winded way, lol, is simple. If God cared so much to see fit to allow a painting, by way of divine or earthly providence, to survive the ravages of war then how much more does he care for you, or me, or any person for that matter? Never give up. Life is never meaningless unless we let it become that way. And trust me. I fully recognize just how easy that is to say and how incredibly difficult that is to personify through the choices we make in this all too fleeting and sometimes very bitter life. In a strange kind of way, even though this work comes across as being quite scary, you’ve actually blessed the viewer. At least you blessed me anyway, lol. You blessed me with your honesty! You said, β€œBut very often I lose heart, and did not want to, everything seems meaningless.” Maybe this is how you feel or at least felt about religion or at least Christianity when you made this haunting and yet compelling piece. As a Christian myself, let me be the first to say that that’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with feeling that religion is a failure or even being angry with God. Just don’t let anger, or hopelessness tare you apart on the inside until you give up all hope and throw away all meaning, in this life. Once again, great work. And thank you for blessing me with your honesty. God bless.

Whew, that was a mouthful, LOL

I think what the artist(s) is trying to do is to give respect to the autonomy of judgement of the viewer(s). I think if he even spouts a word, the viewer(s) would put it in their consideration on interpreting the work, thus interpretation tainted.

Thank you for sharing that. I definitely understand that point of view. I too have felt compelled at times to create work, in just such a way. I think I was just so touched by a lot of the work, in this gallery, in a way that moved me with compassion whereas others seemed to only find controversy. I don't want to sound condescending at all, but w/such "dark" works I just couldn't help but wonder what pains must move one to express themselves in such a way and I guess I started to feel sorry for the artist. Again I don't mean to be demeaning. I know some people simply hate being pitied. In other words I wanted to know more about his personal motivations; curiousity, if you will. Nonetheless thanks a lot for sharing.

Absolutely fucking amazing .

This is the best work I've seen in a long time... but take off the mature label. You shouldn't worry so much about peoples' feelings when it comes to his kind of thing; this piece is fantastic, let the world see it! And if somebody raises hell about it (excuse the wordplay) then so much the better; the more people object to it, the more others will see it and be changed by it
