Description Corel Painter X/Adobe Photoshop

I finally got around to coloring the pic I did of Musa about a year or two ago..lol...what does that say about me...

PROCRASTINATOR!

Lol...anyway...I've been learning more and more about photoshop these days so I decided to give it a shot.

Musa is from the Winx Club.

As stated in the original sketch...I did use a pic for reference.

I would be the most grateful person in the entire world if you would teach me how it is that you did your coloring. I'm new to the world of digital art, and it takes me forever to get my computer to cooperate. Your shading is realistic, but without sacrificing the much loved cartoon feel that Winx gives us. I applaud you!

Thanks so much!

Prepare yourself for a long response...lol!

I can't really claim to be a pro at digital coloring myself. It's something I have been practicing for years now and I'm still not happy with my level of ability and I still get frustrated very easily with digital media. I can recommend some tips and tutorials though that might be of use. Not sure what digital program you are planning to use, but you will definitely need a tablet if you don't already have one.

Tips & Tutorials
*I always read a lot of tutorials by many different people there are so many different ways you can use to color an image and everyone seems to have different ideas and techniques they like to use to do it. I'd recommend reading several and then practice and see what works best for you.
*Know your tools! This was probably one of the hardest parts for me, when I first opened photoshop it had so many things you could use and I had no idea what half of them even did! You can either play with it and find out what they all do yourself, or you can just read tutorials and see what other people use them for. Either way it's important to have at least a basic knowledge of the program your working in.
*Always use lots and lots of layers! You can flatten or merge them later if you want, but usually whenever I start something new I always create a new layer for it, that way if something doesn't go the way I planned I can just delete or erase something from that layer and start over again without having to lose everything.
*Practice, practice, practice! The part that always takes the longest, but you can't really get anywhere without it!
*Here are some tutorials and tutorial sites that can explain there processes step by step with images and hopefully give you e better idea of what I am talking about.

[link] A whole tutorial site that has a few different kinds of tutorials for digital coloring.
You can also find more tutorials by using the search feature on either deviantart or google, just search for "digital coloring tutorials" or something like that.

My Own Digital Coloring Technique is described below if you are interested, but it's a bit long and there are no images to go along with it and show you how I did it.

For a lot of my digital work I tend to switch back and forth between Photoshop CS and Corel Painter X. Mostly just because I like the way I can blend better with Painter X, but I like the brushes in photoshop the most. Most of it can all be done in one program though...whether you use photoshop, painter, sai, or any of the other digital programs.

I'll try to describe the process I used when I colored Musa for now...but there are many different ways of doing it.

*First, you scan in your image and load it up in your digital program. In this case I loaded it up in photoshop first.
*Next, you can either digitally draw in your lines in Photoshop(this is usually what I do since the lines feel a lot cleaner to me), or if you already had good clean lineart from your scanned image you may only have to adjust the levels so that your lines look darker and your background looks whiter.
*Either way make sure your lineart stays on a separate layer to itself, I usually keep my lineart as the top layer and set it to multiply so that you can see they layers under it.
*Once your lineart is ready you will need a new layer, I usually try to go ahead and select my basic background color first and fill in the background with that color. Your lines should still show up as long as your background layer is underneath your lineart layer.
*Next I start blocking everything in, try to keep every separate thing you do on it's own layer! Like when you color your skin make sure your base skin color is on it's own layer, then do the clothing on a separate layer as well...etc. Also when you are shading, I highly recommend doing that on a separate layer above your base color layer for that object.
*Anyway, After I have Musa all colored in with just base colors, I start new layers above those base colors, I use one layer for the darker shadows, I choose where the shadows will be for that layer and just color it in. Next, I create another layer above that one, this one I use for the highlights.
*(Optional)This is where I usually save my image and reopen it in painter and use the blender to just blend in my shadows and highlights to the base color until they look nice and smooth.
*If you decide to do it in photoshop you can get just as good results but it may take longer. (You may want to start a new layer for this as well) Choose a soft brush, and set your brush's opacity to about 10-15% and then choose your dark color and blend it into the base, you may also have to go back and select your base color and blend that back into your shading as well. Repeat the same process for your highlights.
*That's pretty much it!

Sorry this comment is so long, but I wasn't sure how else to explain...either way I hope it was helpful to you in some way. Good luck with your coloring!

Please don't apologize for the long response! I'm so grateful that you took the time to type it! (Not to mention the fact that when my skype friends see me start typing, I typically see "oh, no. here comes a book!" pop up!) I shall review your tips and methods with great diligence!

And, to answer your question, I have a Wacom tablet, and I usually use Sketchbook Pro, though I occasionally use Corel and have just this week finally gotten the nerve to attempt Photoshop (I have Elements 8.0). I think I'm in for a LOT of trial and error.

You're welcome. Lol...I usually get that same response every time I try to comment and explain something with my friends...there like...blah too much reading. I can't help it though...I just try to explain it like I would want someone to explain it to me...and that usually end up being pretty long.

Definitely good that you have a tablet, I can't imagine trying to do any kind of digital coloring without mine! I started off with a Wacom Graphire tablet and recently moved to a Bamboo fun tablet that had a larger screen area, though honestly I think I get just as good results with one as I did the other.

I'm not too familiar with Sketchbook, but generally most coloring programs I have seen can do about the same thing as Photshop or Corel, it's just a matter of learning what does what.

Trial in Error is usually the way it goes for awhile! But practice makes perfect they say! And from what I can see you already have a lot of natural talent and a good idea of shading, blending and design. They will definitely be a help to you when starting digital too!
