Description
Like most people, I was expecting Coco to be a carbon copy of The Book of Life (especially when I first saw the trailer), but after seeing it get rave reviews from both mainstream movie critics and actual Mexicans, I decided to give Coco a chance, and I'm SO glad that I did!Not only did I find it better than The Book of Life, but it made me cry like a baby, and the music was AMAZING! I'm not saying that The Book of Life was "bad", but one of my major problems with it was that most of its songs were just Mariachi versions of American pop songs, but Coco's songs were actually authentic and sounded much nicer too. Another thing that I loved about Coco was how it showcased Mexican culture. Sure, The Book of Life did a little bit of that as well, but that movie was more about the love triangle between the 3 main characters than the actual holiday of Dio de los Muertos.
Also, as I've mentioned in this meme, Coco actually felt like a mix between Beetlejuice, Spirited Away and Kubo and the Two Strings.
- The Land of the Dead in this movie has ghost information booths and ghosts offices, as well as waiting lines for new arrivals, just like in Beetlejuice.
- Miguel accidentally winds up in a spirit world and his body becomes transparent like a ghost as he spends more time there, and eventually has to cross a magical bridge in order to get home, just like Chihiro in Spirited Away.
- It's a story with a heavy emphasis on family with a lot of spiritual/supernatural/mythological elements thrown in there, and the main character is a young boy that plays a string instrument, just like Kubo.
Anyway, I loved Coco, and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

What I expected and what I got were the same. The closest we'll ever come to having a Grim Fandango movie.

For me, Coco was like Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, Spirited Away, The Corpse Bride, and Mamma Mia.

I kind of got Corpse Bride vibes from it too, especially from the villain reveal.

The funny thing is it was one of the first films I saw at the cinema this year. (I was late seeing it because my parents like to wait a few weeks so the theatre isn't as crowded)

Prior to watching Coco, my favourite movie of the year was The Disaster Artist. Now? Coco is not only my third-favourite animated movie (second being Zootopia and first being Land Before Time) but one of my favourite movies period. It is that good.

Even the one who made the Book of Life loved Coco. Give Pixar and Disney credit for that.

I watched Coco today and I was grateful to have seen it! I am a young Chinese man born in America, in case you want to know why I especially appreciated this film. This film not only boosted my appreciation of Mexican culture, it also made me embrace Chinese culture more than ever. Even though Coco has nothing to do with Chinese culture, I felt an even deeper connection to Chinese culture. I began to feel that Mexicans and Chinese share an important thing in common: family, and respecting your dead ancestors. While the Mexicans celebrate the dead using sugar skulls, praying at family altars, and happy images of skeletons, the Chinese bow to their ancestors' graves, light incense sticks, and burning pieces of paper to offer the dead money in the afterlife. The Chinese version of this festival is called Qingming, or Tomb-Sweeping Day. I like to compare cultures and look at similarities between them. I realized that Mexicans and Chinese aren't so different, after all.
Bonus fact: Tamales remind me of zongzi, which are tetrahedral dumplings consisting of sticky rice and filling wrapped in a bamboo leaf and tied with string. Tamales consist of filling and dough covered in corn husks.
I really hope that Disney or Pixar make a film about Diwali, or other popular Hindu festivals! I would be extremely grateful, especially if they make an Disney Princess from India!

I loved Coco. It too hit me in the feels, especially the part where he was singing "Remember Me" and it helped his great-grandmother remember her dad again.
And the Book of Life is different from Coco of course. Coco doesn't focus on romance. It's more family-oriented and focuses more on Day of the Dead. Most of the people who said that Coco copied Book of Life never even seen it. It's never smart to jump to conclusions.
Omg, there were some people who assumed that Coco copied irrelevant movies. One person said that Coco copied Corpse Bride and ParaNorman when both movies are meant to be scary, have nothing to do with Day of the Dead, and are stop-motion not computer-animated. Originality is near impossible nowadays and people don't seem to understand this.

Coco was better than Book of LIfe. Don't get me wrong, I love BOL, but this film was ten times better as the story was stronger and I actually cried at the ending.

I didn't like TBoL very much, TBH.
It was INCREDIBLY cliche, and the only thing that was interesting to me was the subplot involving Xibalba and La Muerte. At least Coco was creative with its cliches.

Honestly, The Book of Life is my favorite film of this decade. Right after I saw Coco, That's when I went as far to saying that it actually topped the former film. While I still love The Book of Life, Coco is by far the best film to even come out of this decade, and IMO, no film released in this decade can top it.

Though, they probably should've kept it as a TV special, rather than a theatrical short.
