Description
This is a tribute to a wonderful Story and Book. Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Old_…Plot
The Old Man and the Sea tells the epic battle between an old, experienced fisherman and a gigantic marlin, possibly the biggest catch of his life.
The novella begins with the fisherman Santiago returning home - without a successful catch for 84 days. He's unlucky.
The parents of his assistant Manolin have already forbidden him to continue travelling with Santiago. Instead, they send Manolin out to sea with successful fishermen.
But Manolin is still attached to Santiago and sneaks into his hut in the evenings, drags the old man's nets and brings him food.
The two often talk about American baseball, especially about Joe DiMaggio, Santiago's great idol.
One day Santiago confidently tells the boy that he will go far into the Gulf the next morning to end his streak of bad luck.
So on the 85th day, Santiago drives far out into the Gulf alone. He lays out his lines. Around midday a big fish bites. Santiago is sure he has a marlin on the hook.
He is unable to heave the large fish into the boat; instead, the marlin pulls the vehicle behind him.
Two days and two nights of struggle pass, during which the old man clutches the cutting line with aching hands. Because of the wounds and torment the marlin inflicts on him,
Santiago develops a spiritual bond with the fish. He starts calling him brother.
On the third day of the ordeal, the fish begins to circle - a sign of exhaustion. Santiago, completely exhausted and delirious, grabs his harpoon and uses it to kill the huge marlin.
He ties the fish to his boat and heads home. The fish will fetch a good price and feed many people, he thinks. In these reflections,
Santiago realizes that the powerful marlin has an extraordinary dignity. No one has the right to eat it.
On the way home, the marlin's blood dripping into the water attracts a large number of sharks. Santiago is able to kill the first, a large mako shark, with his harpoon,
but he loses it in the process. But even without this weapon, he kills three more sharks with the help of his knife, but it breaks. He tries to kill more sharks with a club, without much success.
At night, other predatory fish also tear the remaining meat from the marlin's body. Santiago is left with nothing but a bare skeleton. Finally he reaches the harbor before dawn on the fourth day.
Santiago castigates himself for losing the marlin and drags the heavy mast of his boat on his shoulders to the cabin. There he immediately falls into a deep sleep.
The next day, many fishermen gather at Santiago's boat, which still has the marlin's skeleton tied to it. Tourists from a nearby café think it is a shark skeleton.
Manolin, Santiago's former apprentice, is also among them and worries about the old man. He bursts into tears when he finds him safely asleep, his hands torn open.
He then brings him the newspaper and coffee. After Santiago awakens, the two promise each other to fish together again. For now, Santiago continues to sleep and dreams of lions on an African beach.
